It’s taken 67 years, but when 90 beauty pageant hopefuls strut their stuff across the stage for the Miss Universe competition this Sunday, December 8th, they will be joined by the pageant’s first openly gay contestant—and it’s about time. The pageant world isn’t especially known for its inclusivity. Contestants have historically been overwhelmingly thin, white and model tall. But times are changing.

The 2019 Miss Universe pageant took place on Sunday, airing on Fox, and host Steve Harvey was back with the jokes and some eccentric fashion. Shortly after singer Ally Brooke, 26, opened the show accompanied by the 90 Miss Universe finalists, Harvey launched into a monologue complete with

Steve Harvey hosted Miss Universe 2019 for the fifth time on Sunday, and he once again stirred controversy while joking about his infamous Miss Colombia mix-up from the 2015 pageant.

The comic jokingly addressed his infamous flub when he announced Miss Colombia Gabriela Tafur had made it to the Top 20, poking fun at himself by re-reading and even spelling out Colombia before she took the stage.

Tafur decided to have a little fun as well, and jokingly asked Harvey, "Are you sure you read correctly? Should I go back? Tell me what to do!"

After looking rather embarrassed by the situation, Tafur added, "You're forgiven, don't worry."

Miss Universe 2019: The Winner Is... Ninety women from across the far corners of the known universe assembled on Sunday for the crowning of a new intergalactic queen. All hail. Held at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Ga., the 68th annual Miss Universe competition was once again hosted by mustache icon Steve Harvey, with Olivia Culpo (Paradise City) and Vanessa Lachey (BH90210) serving as backstage correspondents throughout the night. The initial 90 contestants were narrowed down to 20 semifinalists during a closed-door competition prior to Sunday’s three-hour live TV event.

Comedian and television personality Steve Harvey announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez had won over Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo to rapturous applause at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. After being presented with her crown, a sheepish Harvey had to inform the audience and

Steve Harvey and the Miss Universe teleprompter just don't get along. In a strange mix up, host Harvey introduced the winner of the national costume contestant, and after showing a photo of Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados in costume and declaring her the winner, Harvey said, "This is it right here."

"You've forgiven me [but] the cartel has not," Harvey quipped. "They're not handling it the same way."

While it may have been an off-the-cuff joke from Harvey, the comment immediately sparked some online backlash from critics who felt it was offensive and inappropriate to immediately jump to jokes about the Colombian cartel, arguing that it perpetuates stereotypes about people from the South American nation.

"I like how @IAmSteveHarvey makes a joke about the cartel to #MissColombia and then cut to her package and she’s like 'I’m a lawyer and have been fighting violence in my country.' Get it girl," one Twitter user wrote. "And Steve, sit down man."

At last year's Miss Universe pageant , host Steve Harvey notoriously announced Miss Colombia as the pageant 's winner when the crown really belonged to Miss Philippines, an error he awkwardly corrected onstage minutes later. Harvey returned to host the 2017 competition, and after an opening
