A good keyboard isn’t to be underestimated. Particularly if you’re a laptop user, a full-size one can provide a welcome respite from the cramped, often unsatisfying-to-type-on keyboards that are unfortunately found on many models. (Remember all the hate aimed at the butterfly mechanism Apple installed in its 2015 MacBooks?) Whether you’re sitting at your desk all day tapping away or gaming in your free time, you want a keyboard to feel good and work well.

As with most computer accessories, however, there are so many different options available that choosing one can be a daunting task, especially if you’re shopping online and not able to try them out in person beforehand.

Robert Pattinson Finds the Whole ‘Twilight’ Premise ‘Weird’

Robert Pattinson Finds the Whole ‘Twilight’ Premise ‘Weird’ While speaking with Jennifer Lopez for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Robert Pattinson confessed that the blockbuster “Twilight” series always struck him as a profoundly “weird” saga. “It’s a weird story, ‘Twilight.’ It’s not just like – it’s strange how people responded a lot to it. I guess the books are very romantic, but at the same time, it’s not like ‘The Notebook’ romantic. ‘The Notebook’ is very sweet and heartbreaking, but ‘Twilight’ is about this guy, and he finds the one girl he wants to be with, and he also wants to eat her. I mean, not eat her, but drink her blood or whatever,” Pattinson said.

Take a look at quick info on five of our top five keyboards below, then scroll farther for helpful buying advice and longer reviews of these and other models.

Mechanical vs. Membrane

If you’re doing a lot of typing on a daily basis, one of the first things to consider is whether you want a mechanical keyboard. They had fallen out of favor with almost everyone but purists for a long time, but have seen a resurgence in recent years and are now widely available again in a range of different options.

The big advantage with these keyboards, which use individual mechanical key switches as opposed to the rubber membranes or rubber domes found on others, is their responsiveness and tactility—often with a satisfying click sound. You can clearly feel each key press, with none of the mushiness you might be accustomed to with other keyboards. While there are inexpensive options (some even under $50), mechanical keyboards do tend to be more expensive and can easily run well over $100.

‘Trying 2 impeach Jesus too!’ N.C. church making news again for controversial sign

‘Trying 2 impeach Jesus too!’ N.C. church making news again for controversial sign ‘Trying 2 impeach Jesus too!’ N.C. church making news again for controversial signPastor Tim Jones says the sign in front of Resurrection Baptist Church on Old Concord-Salisbury Road, which now reads “TRYING 2 IMPEACH JESUS TOO! WONT HAPPEN EITHER!" is his way of exercising his First Amendment rights about the recent state of politics.

The downside for some, however, is the same thing that many like about them: the noise and tactility. While there are plenty of quieter options, a membrane-based keyboard will still be quieter, which might be better if you’re sharing an office with other folks. And some people do prefer the softer feel and shorter key travel of a membrane or rubber dome keyboard.

Other Considerations

Beyond that, you can narrow your search further by focusing on your needs. If gaming is a priority, you’ll likely want to look into specialized keyboards that offer other features like additional customizable keys, dedicated controls for volume and other functions, and multi-colored backlighting that can be tailored to your liking (and which can come at an added cost).

If you find that typing on a standard keyboard puts a strain on your arms or wrists, an ergonomic keyboard that offers a more comfortable or flexible typing position can be a great investment with long-term benefits. They accomplish this by splitting the board into two sections that let your arms rest more naturally. No keyboard is going to be a cure-all, however.

How We Selected These Keyboards

To determine which keyboards would make our list, we relied on Popular Mechanics’s previous research and reporting on the subject, as well as customer reviews on retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, and professional reviews from a range of trusted publications, including PC World, PC Gamer, Ars Technica, and Wirecutter.

—SATISFYING MECHANICAL—

Varmilo VA87M

Connection: USB | Keys: Cherry MX Black, Brown, Blue or Red

If you’re looking to step up from off-the-shelf, non-customizable mechanical keyboards, the Varmilo VA87M comes highly recommended by Wirecutter. And there are a range of different key switch options—from quieter, easier to press Cherry MX Red switches to louder, firmer Cherry MX Blue switches—to suit your preferred degree of clickiness, shall we say, and tactility. You can also order them customized to your taste instead of doing the customizing yourself, with various colors and platform-specific key caps available to choose from (some of which can expectedly bump up the price).

—IDEAL FOR GAMING—

Corsair K95 RGB Platinum

Connection: USB (with pass-through) | Keys: Cherry MX Speed Silver, with 6 programmable macro keys

Gamers have a very specific set of needs and expectations for a keyboard, and finding a one that’s also good for getting some work done isn’t always an easy task. Corsair’s K95 RGB Platinum strikes a good balance, however, and is a top pick of both PC Gamer and PC Magazine. It’s big and will take up a fair bit of desk space, but it has dedicated media and macro keys, a volume wheel, a removable wrist rest, and even a cable management system underneath. Most importantly, its highly precise Cherry MX Speed Silver switches will ensure fast and responsive keystrokes when you need to react quickly or be outgunned in your favorite FPS.

Ukraine crowds protest over Russia summit

Ukraine crowds protest over Russia summit Some 5,000 Ukrainians rallied in Kiev on Sunday warning President Volodymyr Zelensky to resist pressure from Russia's Vladimir Putin when the two men meet on Monday for talks on the conflict in Ukraine's east. Protesters held placards with slogans such as "No to capitulation", "Stay away from Moscow" and "Russian gas is a noose around our necks" during the rally, led by Zelensky's political opponents. Protesters held placards with slogans such as "No to capitulation", "Stay away from Moscow" and "Russian gas is a noose around our necks" during the rally, led by Zelensky's political opponents.

Logitech MX Keys

Connection: Bluetooth or USB wireless receiver | Power: USB-C rechargeable

Disclaimer: A slim keyboard more akin to those on a laptop won’t satisfy folks who prefer the clicky, tactile feel of a mechanical keyboard. But there are plenty of good options if you’re looking for something that’s a little quieter for an open-office environment. Logitech’s MX Keys is a bit pricey for a non-mechanical keyboard, but both PC World and Digital Trends found it to be easily worth its $100 price tag, offering a streamlined design and sturdy, high-end construction, along with plenty of key customization options. It also has the ability to connect to multiple devices simultaneously, making it a powerful pairing with Logitech’s matching MX Master 3 mouse.

—ERGONOMIC—

Kinesis Freestyle Edge RGB Split

Connection: USB | Keys: Cherry MX Blue, Brown, Red, or Silver, with 8 programmable macro keys

The split design of an ergonomic keyboard can take some getting used to if you’ve never operated one before, but a small learning curve is worth it for anyone dealing with persistent wrist or arm problems. This one from Kinesis is designed for gamers (complete with customizable backlighting and dedicated game keys), but Wirecutter found it to be the best ergonomic option for anyone thanks to its adjustability and great customization. That includes your choice of four different Cherry MX switches, as well as a lift kit accessory (sold separately, unfortunately) that lets you tent the keyboard at different angles for an even more comfortable typing position.

—GOOD ACROSS MULTIPLE DEVICES—

Logitech K780

Connection: Bluetooth or USB wireless receiver | Power: 2 AAA batteries

There are more compact and portable options available if you’re looking to only pair with a tablet, but Logitech’s K780 multi-device wireless keyboard is worth a look for its versatility. It’s full-size, with an inconspicuous cradle that runs along the top and can hold a smartphone or tablet that pairs via Bluetooth, while a wireless USB receiver is also included for desktops or laptops. Ars Technica wasn’t the biggest fan of its round keys but lauded it as one of the best wireless keyboards despite that shortcoming. Three dedicated keys make it easy to switch back and forth between devices, and Logitech’s software offers a slew of customization options to remap keys to the functions you use the most.

—BEST VALUE—

AmazonBasics Wireless Keyboard

Connection: USB wireless receiver | Power: 2 AAA batteries

Maybe you don’t want to spend a ton on a keyboard, or maybe just need one for a second rarely used PC. This AmazonBasics model will give you the convenience of wireless at a budget price (which also includes a wireless mouse). PC World declared it to be a particularly good option for anyone that wants their keyboard to be as quiet as possible, something that thankfully doesn’t come at the expense of responsiveness, as is often the case when companies have to pick and choose features while building a cheap keyboard. It’s expectedly sparse otherwise, but you’ll get 12 multimedia hot keys for volume, playback, and other controls, as well as a full-size numeric keypad and a decent one-year warranty for the price.

Spotify will 'pause' airing political ads in early 2020 .
Spotify, not Facebook, has become the latest tech company to rethink its approach to political ads. Starting early next year, the streaming giant will stop running political ads. Spotify told Ad Age it will "pause" political advertising across both its free ad-supported tier and during any original podcasts it makes. The move will apply only to the US, since it's the one market in which Spotify currently airs such advertisements. Third-party podcasts will still be able to embed political ads in their recordings as long as they adhere to Spotify's content policy.
