Klinghoffer, formerly the band's backup touring guitarist, according to, appeared on the two most recent albums, 2011’s "I’m With You" and 2016’s "The Getaway."

John Frusciante is returning to the Red Hot Chili Peppers as Josh Klinghoffer departs the group, the Red Hot Stone reported. Red Hot Chili Peppers has seven shows scheduled for the summer of 2021, including festival appearances at Hangout Music Festival, Boston Calling and four shows abroad.
“The Red Hot Chili Peppers announce that we are parting ways with our guitarist of the past ten years, Josh Klinghoffer,” the band said in a statement posted to. “Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love. We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us.”
The group also revealed “with great excitement and full hearts” that Frusciante would rejoin the band as lead guitarist.
So far, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have booked two 2020 U.S. shows: May 15 at Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama, and May 22-24 at Boston Calling Music.
