Karlovy Vary Film Festival to Stage Four-Day Fall Screening Event

Karlovy Vary Film Festival to Stage Four-Day Fall Screening Event The Czech Republic’s Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, the leading movie event in Central and Eastern Europe, is to hold a special four-day event in the fall, despite its decision to postpone its 55th edition until next year. The special event, running under the banner “Karlovy Vary IFF 54½,” will unspool Nov. 18-21 in Karlovy Vary, and will seek to evoke the festive atmosphere of the summer event. The noncompetitive festival will present 30 movies, each to be screened twice. Other events will be staged to run alongside the screenings.

The Lido is moving forward with 10 days of masked, temperature-checked, half-capacity movie screenings, as the Venice Film Festival has announced its official lineup for this year's fest, to run Sept. 2 - 12 in Italy.

While festivals such as Telluride and Cannes scrapped their plans amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, La Biennale di Venezia remains hopeful for their 77th Venice International Film Festival, with none other than Cate Blanchett serving as president of the competition jury.

Venice Film Festival to Reduce Official Selection Amid Changes Due to Pandemic

Venice Film Festival to Reduce Official Selection Amid Changes Due to Pandemic The 77th edition will "forego organizing the Sconfini section," and the Venice Classics section will move to Bologna. To comply with measures required by the pandemic, first and foremost social distancing, "the overall number of films in the Official Selection will be lower, although not by much," they said.

Among the film's competing for the Golden Lion this year are The World to Come, starring Casey Affleck and Vanessa Kirby, and Pieces of a Woman, starring Kirby and Shia LaBeouf, plus the Frances McDormand-starring Nomadland from director Chloé Zhao (The Rider and Marvel's upcoming The Eternals).

"Nomadland is a brave and touching journey into a world that exists under the radar of mainstream social consciousness," said Venice International Film Festival Director Alberto Barbera. "It is a film that acquires particular meaning in a moment of pandemic induced seclusion, proving that values like mutual support and a strong sense of community can save us from solitude, failure, and despair."

Meanwhile, Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino will screen his new documentary, Salvatore Ferragamo: The Shoemaker of Dreams, out of competition alongside Nathan Grossman's Greta Thunberg doc, titled Greta.

Shanghai Film Festival Set to Open July 25 Without Foreign Guests

Shanghai Film Festival Set to Open July 25 Without Foreign Guests The 2020 edition of the festival, now scheduled to begin in just over one week, will take a condensed form and be mostly a Chinese affair, staffers for the festival told The Hollywood Reporter Thursday. The festival will go without its usual international jury and main competition, instead screening an abridged selection of gala films for the public and local industry. The event's screening lineup is expected to be released in the days ahead.
