The multi-instrumentalist and singer, who had numerous hits with the Spencer Davis Group, died at the age of 81.

The British musician and founder of the Spencer Davis Group, Spencer Davis, who was last treated in hospital for pneumonia, is dead. His agent Bob Birk announced on Tuesday (October 20th). Davis was 81 years old and died on Monday (October 19).

Davis was born in Wales in 1939 and pursued the goal of making money from music early in his life. In 1963 he founded the Spencer Davis Group with brothers Steve and Muff Winwood and Pete York and wrote numerous hits for the band such as "Gimme Some Lovin", "I'm A Man" and "Keep On Running".

Davis also achieved a solo career in the 1970s after moving to California. As a music manager, he also promoted many talents, including Bob Marley .

The multi-instrumentalist played live with countless rock greats, and in the 90s he began touring again as The Spencer Davis Group, even though Steve Winwood left in 1967 (and founded Traffic). Spencer Davis Group member Pete York accompanied Davis for a large part of his career.

The musician leaves behind his partner and three grown children.
