(Bloomberg) - A record outflow from one of Vanguard Group's largest publicly traded funds has sparked speculation about who is behind this and why.

More than $ 7 billion was withdrawn from the $ 172 billion Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) in a single day this week, data compiled by Bloomberg shows. This corresponds to around 4% of the fund's assets. However, the trading volume was below the year-long average and there were no apparent oversized transactions. The US stock benchmark also rose that day - making a mass exodus less attractive. All of this suggests that a significant investor in the fund has made a large over-the-counter transaction.

Among hedge fund managers, only the strongest will survive in 2020 (Bloomberg) - For years, hedge funds have blamed quiet markets for their unconvincing returns. This excuse won't pull this year. Volatile markets, where stocks move less in lockstep, should actually be an excellent environment for hedge funds to make money. But much of the industry has performance problems and customers are losing patience. "This year the wheat will be separated from the chaff," said Tim Ng, chief investment officer of Clearbrook Global Advisors, which invests in hedge funds.

“We believe the repayment didn't show up because it was an oversized primary market sale,” said Eric Balchunas, an ETF analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. “It's like going straight to a tie manufacturer,” instead of going to a store to buy a tie. “And that's rare because ETFs are mostly used by smaller investors,” he said. The extent of the outflow suggests that VOO, which is popular with private investors, is now also being used by large institutional investors, said Balchunas.

A Vanguard spokesman declined to comment on capital flows.

The VOO has attracted $ 19.5 billion in new capital this year, only surpassed by the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI), which has inflows of $ 27.8 billion.
