Will Oscar Voters Take a Cue From Critics’ Picks?
While awards season may be getting off to a slow, COVID-delayed start, the main critics groups in New York and L.A. haven’t waited to bestow their accolades. But, lacking an overwhelming consensus, they may not have as much impact as they have had in the pastThe previous season, though, offered a different story, with the critics’ voices seemingly having little impact on the outcome of the Oscar contest.

The triple-threat discusses her years-long journey to becoming an ‘overnight sensation’; life as a young actress in the #MeToo era; and providing musical theater to the masses while Broadway is shuttered. On the show, the second season of which is now rolling out, the 31-year-old plays a bubbly Bay Area computer coder whose father — like creator Austin Winsberg’s — was stricken with PSP, a disease that rendered him unable to speak or move, and who becomes concerned that she may have the same affliction after she begins experiencing headaches.

Nomadland, The Father, Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari, Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7 will compete for best film honors. And the best TV drama category will pit The Crown, I May Destroy You and The Mandalorian against Mystery Road and The Queen’s Gambit.
The AACTA International Awards in 2021 has expanded to include global TV across four new categories: best drama series, best comedy series, best actor in a series and best actress in a series. Usually held in Los Angeles, this year the awards show, owing to travel restrictions due to the pandemic, will produce a highlights package of acceptance speeches to stream on AACTA’s YouTube channel starting on March 5.
“Even though we can’t hold an event in Los Angeles this year, we thought it very important to still shine a light on the best of the global screen industry, give our members the opportunity to have their say too and mark another excellent year of work,” AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella said in a statement.
