Comedian John Mulaney has checked into rehab , reports People magazine. People, confirming an earlier New York Post report , said the former "Saturday Night Live" writer, 38, is seeking treatment after. Mulaney has spoken extensively about his struggles to stay sober, and said that he started drinking at age 13. In a 2019 Esquire article, he said, "I drank for attention. I was really outgoing, and then at 12, I wasn't. I didn't know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again."

John Mulaney is out of rehab after completing a two-month stint for substance abuse issues.

"John has completed 60 days in rehab and now he's in outpatient sober care," a source told Page Six on Feb. 25. "He is doing well, although he is still not ready to return to work."

The former "Saturday Night Live" comedian surprised fans when he entered a rehab facility in Pennsylvania just before Christmas in 2020.

"John's friends and family are happy that he's finally getting some help and focusing on his health," a source told the New York Post's gossip section at the time. "His fans know he's struggled in the past with sobriety, he has talked about it openly. Unfortunately he has struggled again during the pandemic."

John has spoken of his vices in the past, telling Esquire in 2019 that he began drinking at 13 years old "for attention."

"I was really outgoing, and then at 12, I wasn't. I didn't know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again," he said.

John admitted that he eventually moved into hard drugs, including cocaine.

"I never liked smoking pot. Then I tried cocaine, and I loved it," he said. "I wasn't a good athlete, so maybe it was some young male thing of This is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodin and a tequila and I'm still standing. Who's the athlete now?"

At one point, he said he drank perfume. In 2005, though, he realized he had a problem.

"I went on a bender that weekend that was just, like, fading in and out of a movie … It was just crazy," he told Esquire. "And I thought to myself, 'I don't like this guy anymore. I'm not rooting for him.'"

Without professional help, he stopped drinking and using cocaine, he said.

John also spoke about his addiction in his 2012 Comedy Central special "New In Town."
