L Cuban dissident José Daniel Ferrer, leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (Unpacu), was arrested on Friday at his home in Santiago de Cuba (East), announced its support.

"José Daniel Ferrer, leader of Unpacu, has been arbitrarily arrested and has since disappeared," Zaqueo Baez, deputy national coordinator of this banned group, told AFP by telephone.

Mr. Ferrer, who was in house arrest, is one of the best-known Cuban opponents among those who have chosen to stay in Cuba rather than go into exile.

He was one of the 75 political prisoners arrested during the black spring of 2003. He was released in 2011 following a mediation by the Catholic Church which had allowed a total of the release of more than 130 political prisoners of which the most had gone into exile in

Spain . Twelve of them, including Mr. Ferrer, had decided to stay in Cuba to continue their activities as opponents.

Last fall, Cuba seemed to have brilliantly controlled the epidemic in its territory. But the opening of the borders in early November, followed by the massive influx of visitors from abroad, was a game-changer. The island expects a peak of around 1,600 daily cases in early March. A figure that remains relatively low compared to the rest of the American continent.

According to activists from the dissident group, police officers surrounded Mr. Ferrer's residence in the Altamira neighborhood on Friday morning before entering and taking him through the back door.

On the facade of his house, which is also the headquarters of Unpacu, Mr. Ferrer painted the words "Patria y Vida" ("Homeland and Life"), evoking the title of a song by Cuban rappers that has gone viral on social networks and which takes the opposite of the revolutionary slogan "Patria o muerte". The socialist government in Havana denounced it as a provocation.

Mr. Ferrer and three other members of his group were imprisoned from March 2019 to April 2020 before having their sentences commuted to house arrest for periods of four to five years.

The Cuban political system admits only one party, the

Communist Party , and considers the opposition to be illegal. The government accuses the dissidents of being funded by the US government to bring about the downfall of socialism on the island.
