Merkel steps down with legacy dominated by tackling crises

Merkel steps down with legacy dominated by tackling crises BERLIN (AP) — Angela Merkel will leave office as one of modern Germany's longest-serving leaders and a global diplomatic heavyweight, with a legacy defined by her management of a succession of crises that shook a fragile Europe rather than any grand visions for her own country. In 16 years at the helm of Europe's biggest economy, Merkel did end military conscription, set Germany on course for a future without nuclear and fossil-fueled power, enable the legalization of same-sex marriage, introduce a national minimum wage and benefits encouraging fathers to look after young children, among other things.

Germany has picked I’m Your Man, a sci-fi rom-com from director Maria Schrader (Unorthodox) to represent the country for the 2021 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Category.

I’m Your Man stars Downton Abbey and Legion actor Dan Stevens as a German-speaking “love robot” programmed to be the perfect match for a no-nonsense German archeologist, played by German theater star Maren Eggert. The feature premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February, where Eggert won the Silver Bear for Best Lead Performance. I’m Your Man made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Merkel: Rebuilding of flood-hit areas will take a long time

Merkel: Rebuilding of flood-hit areas will take a long time BERLIN (AP) — Despite Germany's commitment to rebuilding, it will take a long time until the regions damaged by devastating floods in July are put back together, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday as she toured places badly damaged by the floods. “The reconstruction will take a long time,” Merkel told reporters Sunday in flood-hit Hagen in North Rhine-Westphalia state. Merkel visited a bridge in Hagen that was destroyed but has been nearly rebuilt and talked to firefighters in the Sauerland region who had lost two colleagues during rescue efforts in July, the German news agency dpa reported.

Schrader co-wrote the screenplay to I’m Your Man with screenwriter Jan Schomburg, based on a short story by German writer Emma Braslavsky. It is Schrader’s fourth feature as a director and follows her critically-acclaimed biopic Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe (2016). Schrader’s last outing as a director, on Netflix’s miniseries Unorthodox, earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special.

The multi-hyphenate is well-known as an actor, with credits that include Aimee & Jaguar (1999), Rosenstrasse (2003) and the Amazon series Deutschland 83.

The shortlist for the 2022 Oscars will be unveiled on Dec. 21, 2021. Nominations will be announced on Feb. 8, 2022. The 94th Academy Awards will be held March 27, 2022.

Annalena Baerbock Wants to Radically Change Germany. She'll Have to Win Voters' Trust First .
Green chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock is trying to bring voters around to her sweeping change platform ahead of Sept. 26 elections. “It was hard for me to understand every word of that,” she jokes in the clipped consonants of northern German, as she thanks the drawling local emcee for introducing her. It’s not just the accent that makes Baerbock feel out of place. A stickler for facts and a practiced debater of foreign affairs, she calls to mind a university professor more than the male retail politicians who have done well in Bavaria in recent years.
