Speaking at a press conference at the Venice film festival shortly before the film ’s world premiere, the pair were keen to present their feminist credentials and the relevance of The Last Duel to the MeToo movement. Saying that he considered himself a feminist, Affleck described The Last Duel as “a film about someone who is denied justice, who goes to great lengths to seek justice at great risk to themselves ”.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon , who have collaborated for their upcoming film The Last Duel, had set high standards for themselves when they wrote the 1997 film . At the New York City premiere for their upcoming film 'The Last Duel', Damon told E! News that he and Affleck "assumed (writing) would be so time-consuming that we'd never be able to do it."'The Talented Ripley' actor explained that between his family and Affleck 's they thought they'd "never find the time" to write another script like 'Good Will Hunting'.

'Good Will Hunting took us so long,' said Matt. 'We were unemployed, broke guys. It took us forever to write the screenplay. I think we wrote thousands and thousands of pages. We didn't really know what we were doing and I think that really put us off writing again cause we never thought we would really have the time.'

Matt said that after all these years of making movies that they found the process this time went a lot quicker. Ben said it also helped that they looped in experienced writer Nicole Holofcener, who appeared with them, to write the female perspective for the movie. Nicole saaid she got involved with this project when she got an email from Ben.

Ben said he discovered Nicole in 2013 when he was reading the terrible reviews after his movie Daredevil was released.

Damon and Affleck won the Oscar for best original screenplay in 1997, and at the time they were 27 and 25, respectively. Before GWH they were relative unknowns, and after their Oscar win they each began their meteoric rise as actors. Does anyone have thoughts on this..? Did they catch lightning in a bottle with GWH? Or, from a more cynical or conspiracy-theorist perspective, do you think they actually wrote GWH themselves ? There are some parts of the movie (especially Robin Williams's monologues) when I think to myself, how in the HELL did two actors in their mid-twenties write that.
