"Thor: Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi revealed that Chris Hemsworth came up with the idea to extend the fan-favorite character Korg's screen time in the 2017 Marvel movie.

"I just started reading scenes with Chris to see how they played for him, and [Korg] was only in one or two scenes," Waititi said in a new behind-the-scenes book called "The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe" by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry.

Korg, voiced by Waititi, was first introduced to the MCU when Thor encountered the Kronan warrior on the planet Sakaar in "Ragnarok."

The director said that the evolution of Korg was unplanned and happened while working with Hemsworth approximately two or three months before principal photography began on the film.

"I started messing around as a joke, giving Korg different voices and giving other characters different voices," Waititi said. "I played with Korg's voice, which is a very colloquial New Zealand accent, a very rural accent, and Chris cracked up at that. Then we riffed on that a little bit more and Chris was like, 'You should play that. It'd be really funny.'"

Third time’s the charm! Wonder Woman 3 officially has the green light — and Warner Bros. has already revealed some juicy details about the superhero film. The studio initially announced the third movie in December 2020, just days after Wonder Woman 1984 started streaming on HBO Max. Gal Gadot, who plays the iconic Diana Prince, will collaborate with director Patty Jenkins for the third time. “We are excited to be able to continue [Wonder Woman’s] story with our real-life Wonder Women – Gal and Patty – who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy,” WB chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement at the time. It isn’t clear whether this is the final film for Gadot’s Wonder Woman, but the third solo outing will likely tie up any remaining loose ends. “I want to see a third movie, too, to have ‘a nice closure,’” Gadot told the “Just for Variety” podcast with Marc Malkin the same month. Jenkins, who is set to write and direct the third Wonder Woman film, has been toying with a concept for a while. However, the Emmy nominee revealed that she wasn’t ready to commit to the story until the team gets closer to filming. “I’ve really hit the pause button. Because the truth is, where that plotline was coming from was our state of being six months ago,” she told Total Film in June 2020. “And so I want to make sure that I’m totally absorbing whatever the result of this [coronavirus] pandemic is.” The first Wonder Woman was released in June 2017 and took place in 1918 at the height of World War I as the superhero learned about the human world and discovered her gifts. In 2020, the debut of Wonder Woman 1984 revealed that Diana still had much to learn about her powers, including her ability to fly. The third movie, however, is unlikely to take place in the distant past. “I’m not planning to put it in the past again, because where are you going to go? You have to go forward,” Jenkins told The Hollywood Reporter in January 2019. “It’s definitely a contemporary story. That’s all I can say.” DC Comics fans know that Diana Prince’s superhero alter ego is completely unknown by the public when the events of 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice happen, so the upcoming flick might explain why Wonder Woman seemingly put down her golden lasso. Scroll down for everything we know so far about Wonder Woman 3:

"We were having so much fun with that character, and then Chris said, 'We should do more. Find more scenes to put him in,'" Waititi said. "I guess, because we were in Australia - and they couldn't really find us or control us - we were able to just start shoving Korg in here and there. And now he becomes this ridiculously prominent character."

Waititi also said that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was particularly encouraging of his creativity.

"All of Korg's stuff was pretty much ad-libbed on the day," he said. "And a lot of it was just stuff to kind of loosen us up."

Korg appeared throughout "Ragnarok" and returned in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." Waititi will reprise the role for the upcoming fourth "Thor" film called "Thor: Love and Thunder," which he's also directing.

In an Instagram live video as part of a "Ragnarok" watch party in April 2020, Waititi said that fans will learn more about Korg's culture and where he came from in the new movie.

"Thor: Love and Thunder" is currently set for release on July 8, 2022.
