Prince Harry is in the hot seat (again) thanks to his upcoming four-book deal and Thomas Markle's controversial new Fox News interview where he claims he will be petitioning the California courts so that he can meet his grandchildren. Back in the UK, however, everything is moving along swimmingly as the royal family celebrates Prince George's 8th birthday and the Queen heads to Scotland for her annual summer holiday. Here's everything you need to know...
-
Prince Harry said of his project: 'I'm writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become. I've worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story— the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned — I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think. I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I've learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that's accurate and wholly truthful.'
-
Sources close to Prince Charles said Harry's father was 'surprised' at the news and that the royals had not been warned in advance that a book was in the offing until the news broke on Monday. Harry's suggestion that he would be writing about his 'mistakes' and the 'lessons' he has learned also raised eyebrows. Royal sources said they believed that the prince had 'never been one to willingly admit' any mistakes and had spent the last three years 'blaming everyone except himself and his wife' for the catastrophic breakdown in relations with his family.
-
The California-based couple is said to have made their intentions clear during Harry's visit to the UK for the unveiling of Princess Diana's statue earlier this month. 'Harry told several people that they want to have Lili christened at Windsor, just like her brother,' a royal source told royal expert and columnist Richard Eden. 'They are happy to wait until circumstances allow.' It would be Meghan's first visit to Britain since the couple quit royal duties last year. Six weeks after Lili's birth, she has not yet been given the eighth place in the line of succession that she is due, according to the official royal website. It's understood that the list will not be updated until after the christening. Lili would bump the Queen's second son, Prince Andrew, into ninth place. Lili will join the list as long as she is not baptized a Roman Catholic, as they are specifically excluded from succession to the throne. Pictured: Meghan holding Archie during a royal tour.
-
Although Meghan attended a Catholic high school, she was baptized and confirmed into the Church of England in a private ceremony at the Chapel Royal conducted by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. Meghan followed partly in the footsteps of the Duchess of Cambridge, who was baptized as an infant but had a private confirmation after her engagement to Prince William. HOW DID WE GET HERE? Meghan Markle struggled to 'switch off' the American dream' and understand her 'duty was to the Queen', a US-born viscountess has claimed in a new documentary. Meghan at 40: The Climb to Power, which airs on Channel 5 in the UK on Saturday ahead of The Duchess of Sussex' landmark birthday on August 4th, explores the former Suits star's life from being born in California to her relationship with The Firm today.
-
Speaking in the program Julie Montagu (pictured right), who was born in Illinois but moved to the UK 16 years ago when she married Luke Timothy Charles Montagu, Viscount Hinchingbrooke, the son of the 11th Earl of Sandwich, explained that Meghan's struggle with her in-laws came from an inability to 'let go' of American ideals. 'You can't really be anything you want to be or do anything you want to do or say anything you want to say,' Viscountess Hinchingbrooke explained. 'Your duty is to the Queen and that's very difficult for someone like Meghan. To switch off that American dream and accept "now you have to do what we say" is difficult'.
-
Meghan is also dealing with family drama on the other side of the pond. This week, Meghan's dad Thomas Markle threatened to take his estranged daughter and Prince Harry to court in order to see his grandchildren. The 77-year-old former lighting director has yet to meet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s two children, Archie and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor, or his son-in-law. But speaking to Fox News, Mr Markle said he was ready to take the matter to court 'in the very near future'.
-
Mr Markle has had a strained relationship with his daughter ever since the royal wedding, before which he struck a deal with a paparazzi photographer to stage photos of him. He then pulled out of walking Meghan down the aisle at the ceremony after suffering a heart attack, with Prince Charles taking his place. Meghan later told Oprah that her father had 'betrayed' her and she 'found it hard to reconcile' with him. The relationship has only grown more tense as Mr Markle has continued to talk to reporters and paparazzi. But with his health continuing to deteriorate, Thomas has said he fears he will never get to meet Archie, 2, or baby Lilibet, who was born on June 4. Speaking at his Mexico home, 70 miles from the Sussexes' LA mansion, he said: 'We shouldn’t be punishing [Lili] for Meghan and Harry’s bad behavior... I will be petitioning the California courts for the rights to see my grandchildren in the very near future'.

ALL THE QUEEN'S HORSES: Despite a tumultuous week in the US, life went on as usual in the UK with the Queen spotted behind the wheel of her Range Rover while visiting the Sandringham stables before heading to Balmoral for her annual summer holidays. On Sunday, the Queen wore a white top adorned with pink roses beneath a green vest to visit her horses alongside John Warren, her bloodstock and racing adviser. The Queen takes a particular interest in bloodstock breeding and has been rewarded with considerable success on the racecourse.
-
The Queen has owned hundreds of race horses through the years and has claimed more than 1600 race wins – a figure that's still growing. As well as thoroughbreds, Elizabeth also breeds Shetland ponies at Balmoral in Scotland and Fell ponies at Hampton Court. In 2007 she opened a full-time Highland pony stud at Balmoral to enhance and preserve the breed.
-
Speaking of Balmoral (pictured), Her Majesty will have plenty of time with her Highland ponies this summer as she was seen being driven away from Windsor Castle for Scotland on Friday. It marks the first vacation for the Queen at her and Philip's 'happy place' since he passed away in April. Typically the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are joined by their children and grandchildren, as well as close friends, throughout the summer holiday. This year, the Queen is likely to remain at the 50,000-acre estate until early October and will be joined by family members throughout her stay.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRINCE GEORGE! A new photo of Prince George to mark his eighth birthday shows him sitting on a vehicle synonymous with his great-grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh. The snap was taken by proud mother Kate Middleton, 39, at their Norfolk home of Amner Hall and shows the future king perched on the bonnet of a Land Rover Defender.
-
Philip (pictured in 2018), who died in April a few months short of his 100th birthday, regularly drove Land Rovers and during his funeral the duke's coffin was carried by a specially adapted Defender which he helped to design. Including the famous vehicle in the image will be seen as a poignant tribute to the Duke, George's great-grandfather, who had a passion for engineering.
-
George, who celebrated his birthday on Thursday, is pictured beaming in the photograph, and is casually dressed in a £10 ($13.75) John Lewis polo-style striped top and shorts.

The duchess is a keen photographer and regularly produces images of George, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three, to mark milestones in her children's lives. Earlier this year, Kate revealed her children sometimes wish she would put her camera down. Speaking to a finalist of her Hold Still photography contest, the duchess said about George, Charlotte, and Louis: 'Everyone's like, "Mummy, please stop taking photographs".'

ROYAL SMALL TALK: A newly unearthed video shows the Queen giggling as she makes small talk and chats in French alongside Prince Charles, then 43, and Princess Diana, then 30, and world leaders at the G7 summit in 1991. The clip captures rare candid moments for the members of the royal family, who have rarely appeared in such behind-the-scenes documentaries. In one fascinating moment, the monarch, then 65, could be seen speaking to Secretary of State James Baker and former Prime Minister Ted Heath, who spoke of visiting Saddam Hussein in Baghdad. After he told the Queen he had visited the country, she could be seen laughing, before touching his arm and saying: 'I know you did. But you are expendable now.' Royal commentators were quick to comment on the video, with Valentine Low tweeting: 'What is noticeable here: 1. How well informed and articulate the Queen is and 2. How the men, including Heath, insist on talking over her.'
-
The Queen also showed off her French skills, introducing a guest to then Prime Minister Heath by saying: 'You know all these people, and you know Mr Heath.' Later, the royal joined an American attendee and Heath as they spoke about an unnamed man. Heath told the pair: 'I was absolutely blunt with him and told him the situation...now I get a message back that says he rather wishes he listened to my advice.' The Queen replied: 'I mean, I wonder, is he master of his own situation? It's very interesting isn't it to have someone morally, nominally, every way else defeated...'
-
Meanwhile in another moment, Princess Diana could be seen laughing with Barbara Bush as they were told to 'line up' for a photo of the occasion. Diana giggled as Barbara responded that it was 'just the boys', with the late princess adding: 'Boys only!'
-
Meanwhile Prince Charles could be heard explaining: '[I'm going to] summer school again this year...I'm quite pleased because I managed to fund it with the sale of my own lithographs so at least I feel I have earned it.' Other people at the star-studded gathering included the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince and Princess of Wales, John Major, George H. W. Bush, François Mitterrand, Helmut Kohl and Margaret Thatcher.

Already mum to son Arthur, two, she and multi-millionaire financier husband James Matthews, 45, welcomed little Grace in March.
Pippa looked chic in a long check button-down dress in shades of blue, which tied at the waist.
Opting for a casual look, she teamed it with white tennis-style trainers and whisked her brunette locks back into a messy bun.
Pippa kept her make-up natural and sported minimal jewellery - bar her large 3.5 carat £200,000 diamond engagement ring and a delicate necklace.
Socialite Pippa is often seen out and about walking her children and dogs in south west London, though yesterday evening she opted to leave her pets and eldest son at home.
Last month she was seen expertly carving her way through Chelsea's traffic on a stylish black bicycle, wearing a light blue dress and a helmet.

Passers-by could see her show her proficiency in urban cycling as she confidently indicated her turns to nearby cars.
She was also spotted on Centre Court at Wimbledon earlier this month, enjoying a rare daytime date. The couple watched the men's semi-final match between Italy's Matteo Berrettini and Poland's Hubert Hurkacz.
They also made an appearance at the European Championships semi-final match at Wembley, keeping a relatively low profile as they cheered on England who triumphed over Denmark.
Pippa and James were seen queuing alongside punters to enter the event and did not join their brother-in-law Prince William in his box.
Kate Middleton was unable to attend that match, having been forced to self-isolate after she came into contact with someone who tested positive - despite being double-jabbed and testing negative for the virus herself.
Grace was born in the early hours of 15 March, weighing 6lbs 7oz.

Celebs Clap Back at the Parenting Police Read article The Hills: New Beginnings star, 33, sparked backlash when she posted a photo of son Rowan resting in his crib on Wednesday, November 17. “It cracks me up that he manages to scoot himself down to that corner every single night,” the New Hampshire native wrote of the 1-month-old via her Instagram Story. “But also, he slept 10.
Grace's middle names - Elizabeth Jane - are a nod to her grandmothers, Carole Elizabeth Middleton and Jane Matthews, while Elizabeth might also be a subtle acknowledgement of the family's royal ties.
Rumours of Pippa's pregnancy first swirled shortly before Christmas when Page Six reported the couple were expecting another baby.
A source close to the Middleton family told the publication in December Kate's sister was expecting, saying: 'Pippa and James are thrilled, it's fantastic news amid a difficult year. The entire family is delighted.'
Pippa never commented on the pregnancy and instead kept a characteristically low public profile.
Pippa began dating James in 2016 and the two tied the knot in May 2017. The racing driver-turned city trader, who was privately educated at Uppingham School, is set to inherit the Scottish courtesy title of ‘Laird of Glen Affric’ which came with the 10,000-acre estate of the same name near Inverness that his father bought in 2008.
James is listed as managing director of Beaufort Glen Affric. He owns a £3m private jet and bought a six-bedroomed, £17m house in 2014, which boasts a car-stacking garage in the basement, along with an underground home cinema and a lift.
