Saturday Night Live looked quite a bit different this week. Paul Rudd was set to host, but due to the spike in COVID-19 cases, the show decided to forgo a live audience and the musical guest and pre-tape most of the sketches.

However, this was also supposed to be a momentous occasion for Rudd, as he was set to join the so-called five-timers club -- i.e. celebs who have hosted five or more times.

Luckily, the show made sure to still celebrate the accomplishment, and with some impressive guest stars. The episode kicked off with Tom Hanks stepping out onto stage rocking his iconic five-timers club jacket and explaining the situation in his usual, comforting tone.

Tom Hanks coined the term ' Five - Timers Club ' in 1990 after he hosted Saturday Night Live for the fifth time — see who else has hosted the late-night sketch show five times (or more! Hanks is actually the one who first mentioned the notorious Five - Timers Club on air when he hosted in 1990. At the time, he showed off his "membership card" and was welcomed into the " club " by members Steve Martin, Elliot Gould and honorary member Paul Simon (who only hosted four times, but was a musical guest so often that they let him in).

"Tonight, everyone on Saturday Night Live planned to do our big Christmas show and induct a new member into the five-timers club, but COVID came early this year," Hanks shared. "So, in the interest of safety, we do not have an audience, and we sent home our cast, and most of our crew. But I came here from California and if they think I was going to fly 3,000 miles and not be on TV, they got another thing coming."

Hanks then introduced Tina Fey, another club member, telling her, "Thank you for joining me Tina. As you know, I started the five-timers club."

"Oh, like you started COVID!" Fey said, joking about how Hanks was the first major celeb to go public with contracting the illness at the start of the pandemic last year. However, the pair said they weren't going to let anything keep Rudd from having his special moment, and called him out onto the stage.

Paul Rudd 's joining elite company at Saturday Night Live , but that's not stopping him from cracking a joke, even if it comes at his expense. The Ghostbusters: Afterlife star appeared alongside musical guest Charli XCX and SNL cast member Ego Nwodim in a promo for the upcoming show, which closes out the 47th season. The so-called club wasn't actually even a thing, until Tom Hanks mentioned it when he guest hosted for the fifth time back on Dec. 8, 1990. And it wasn't until 1999 when the club reared its head again on TV, courtesy of Danny DeVito, who mentioned his admission into the club .

While Rudd was all smiles, he admitted that he was disappointed by the turn of events.

"It's not all that bad. People magazine just named you the most sexist man of the year!" Hanks said.

"Oh, no, I think it was sexiest," Rudd corrected.

To keep the party going, Fey and Hanks had Kenan Thompson present Rudd with his own club jacket and then introduced a pre-taped message from Steve Martin and Martin Short who also celebrated the occasion.

Addressing the unusual format of the show, Thompson shared, "Don't worry. We still have a great show for everybody, including brand-new sketches taped earlier this week."

"And, we're going to show some of our personal favorites from past episodes," Fey added.

"Yeah, It'll be a little like that new Beatles documentary. A lot of old footage but enough new stuff to make you go, 'Yeah, OK, I'll watch that."

Billie Eilish’s New, Playful Persona

Billie Eilish’s New, Playful Persona As SNL host, the pop star appeared to have embraced mainstream celebrity. But her musical performances revealed the journey that got her there.Whereas Eilish once shied away from the hypervisibility of public life, she’s instead embraced mainstream celebrity—and the branding it so often requires. In the past year, she’s recorded the newest James Bond theme song, dropped her second album, released an Apple TV+ documentary, put on a concert on Disney+, co-chaired the 2021 Met Gala, and prepared to launch a perfume.

Tonight, Paul Rudd will perform on Saturday Night Live in what will undoubtedly be a memorable finale to the show’s 2021 season. While it’s certain to feature some holiday sketches and great musical performances from Charli XCX, Rudd ’s return is also noteworthy. To commemorate Tom Hanks ’ fifth appearance on Saturday Night Live , the writers created a fictional backstage VIP club where all five - time hosts congregate. Hanks is introduced to Steve Martin, Elliott Gould, and musical guest mainstay Paul Simon in the first sketch.

Saturday Night Live 's Five - Timer 's Club includes celebrities who have hosted at least five times , and fewer than two-dozen have been inducted so far. The trend began way back in 1990 when Tom Hanks mentioned it was his fifth time hosting the show. The first inductee (before the club was even a "thing") was Buck Henry, who hosted for his fifth time in 1977. Steve Martin followed shortly after in 1978. Now, there are 22 members in SNL 's Five - Timers Club .

The episode itself was a blend of pre-taped sketches Rudd and the cast filmed earlier in the week, as well as classic SNL holiday sketches from the past.

While the Omicron variant's been wreaking havoc across the nation, New York in particular has seen a dramatic increase in cases. The Big Apple on Friday had the highest single-day total (21,027) of new COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic. SNL adds that it "continues to follow all government safety guidelines in addition to a rigorous testing protocol."

SNL is hardly the only show in town being affected by COVID-19. The rising cases in New York has also triggered the closure of several Broadway plays and cutting short the Radio City Rockettes' season.
