A Temple University student who was fatally shot inside his apartment near campus over the weekend called police himself and told them he couldn’t breathe.

Daniel Duignam, 21, was found dead inside his first-floor residence a little before 10 p.m. Saturday, and police believe he was shot by someone he knew, Philadelphia Police Capt. John Ryan confirmed at a press conference Monday.

“There was clear signs of a struggle,” Ryan said.

Ryan said police believe the shooter robbed money from Duignam, who was a junior at the Philadelphia-based university. Police do not currently have any suspects.

There was no indication of a forced entry into the apartment, leading law enforcement to believe the shooter was already inside Duignam’s home when he opened fire.

“The house was ransacked,” Ryan said, noting that the door was locked when police arrived.

Ryan would not confirm whether Duignam said anything else to police other than that he couldn’t breathe. Duignam suffered gunshot wounds to his chest, forearm and groin, according to Philly.com.

Duignam, who was enrolled at Temple’s Fox School of Business, did not have any roommates.

Englert, released a statement over the weekend informing students of Duignam’s death.

“Temple University Police and Philadelphia Police are investigating,” his statement reads. “While there are many questions yet to be answered, they do not believe that this was a random act.”

Englert said they will increase police patrols around campus in the wake of the shooting.

“On behalf of everyone at Temple, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to Daniel’s family and friends at this tragic time,” he said. “They are in the thoughts and prayers of us all.”

Police say they’re now looking for anyone who can provide information that might lead them to the shooter.
