PHILADELPHIA — Jacob deGrom , the Mets ’ best pitcher, returned on Sunday from a short stint on the 10-day disabled list for a hyperextended throwing elbow. Normally, the Mets announce what injury led to a player’s early exit during a game.

BOX SCORE:  PHILLIES 4, METS 2

DeGrom just came off the DL Sunday morning with a hyperextended elbow. He pitched just one inning Sunday before the Mets removed him. DeGrom had to work extremely hard to get through that bottom of the first, throwing 45 pitches and making a good defensive play to escape unscathed.

The Mets announced that they removed him for precautionary reasons, citing the 45 pitches, a career-high in an inning for deGrom, and the 59-minute delay to start the game. They emphasized it was not because of his previous injury.

But it left the Mets bullpen to pick up eight innings.

They kept it scoreless into the sixth, but then Mets manager Mickey Callaway stuck with Paul Sewald against left-handed pinch-hitter Nick Williams in the sixth, even with Jerry Blevins up and ready to go. Sewald's splits against lefties this season have been strong and in his only other time facing Williams, Sewald had struck him out.
