A Baltimore County, Maryland police officer was fatally shot Monday by a suspect who still remains at large.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a Baltimore County Police Officer after she was shot in the line of duty today," Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan tweeted. "Our prayers go out to this brave officer's family, @BACOPoliceFire, and the Baltimore County community."

The officer was shot in Perry Hall, Fox 45 reported. Councilman David Marks confirmed via Twitter the officer was shot but said he had no further details on the incident.

A Baltimore County, Maryland police officer was killed Monday following an altercation with suspects still on the loose . The deceased officer , who has not yet been identified, responded to the scene in Perry Hall, where she was fatally injured.

There are reports that the officer was shot in the head but that could not be immediately confirmed. WBAL reported the officer has been "critically wounded," while the county's public safety branch tweeted the officer was transported to a local hospital.

Police are searching for "at lease one armed suspect" in the area of Belair Road and Klausmeier Road, and residents should shelter in place, officials said.

The man sought by police in the fatal shooting of a Tennessee sheriff's deputy was charged the previous day with aggravated assault of a woman and vehicle theft. A report from the Kingston Springs Police Department says Steven Joshua Wiggins slapped the woman in her face and pulled out some of her hair Tuesday. The report says the woman stated that Wiggins put a gun to her head and threatened to kill her if she called the police, then he grabbed her car keys and took the car without her permission.The woman also told police Wiggins was "doing meth all night and smoking marijuana.
