Forget about textgate, the very original name I’m now using to describe LeBron James reportedly reaching out to Kevin Durant to play in Los Angeles together. In fact, the King is denying that report entirely. Therefore we’re moving on. While the Lakers continue trying to acquire Kawhi Leonard from the San Antonio Spurs, something’s come up. Per Jordan Schultz of Yahoo! Sports, Leonard has reached out to the king himself.

“…Leonard has reached out to LeBron James, informing the 33-year-old superstar that he wants to play alongside him, a source told Yahoo Sports. … Leonard pitched James on his incredible defensive ability and how it would alleviate the pressure on James, the source said.”

It’s true, of course. After all, Leonard is a phenomenal defensive player. Meanwhile, LeBron is coming off yet another NBA Finals appearance with yet another lackluster team around him. But teaming up with Leonard in LA could change all of that. The Spurs are sure to get an excellent return no matter where Leonard goes — whether it be LA or Boston — but both the Lakers and Celtics have plenty of assets to cope with any potential loss. No matter what, adding Leonard AND James is worth it if you’re able to do it. Those two alone wouldn’t make the Lakers championship contenders, but they’d suddenly be a whole lot more dangerous than most teams out west.

Last season, Kawhi put up just 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals over nine games for the Spurs. But when fully healthy, he’s the Defensive Player of the Year. When healthy, he’s a bona fide MVP candidate. LeBron put up 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 9.1 assists and 1.4 steals this past season. Plus he’s coming off playing some of his best basketball at the age of 33.

In short, this is more than enough star power to get the Lakers going. And we just hope, for the sake of NBA fans around the world being angry, that something like this happens. After all, James isn’t going to go to a team where he’ll be the only star. He’s done with that life, and this is a perfect opportunity.
