Colorado cares for bear cub that burned its paws in wildfire An orphaned bear cub that suffered painful burns to her paws in a Colorado wildfire is being nursed back to health. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers said Friday that they believe she will recover well enough to be returned to the wild. She was found wandering alone in a burned-over area north of Durango last week and rescued. After she heals, she will be placed in an enclosure with four other cubs.Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers believe the bear will recover well enough to be released this winter.

    California wildfire turns San Francisco sky orange

    California wildfire turns San Francisco sky orange A wildfire burning out of control in rural Northern California sent a stream of smoke over 70 miles south into the San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday, transforming the sky into an eerie hazy mix of orange. The County Fire in Yolo and Lake Counties has burned at least 50 square miles northwest of San Francisco, and is only 2 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. No injuries have been reported so far, but the blaze fueled by hot air and dry winds threatens more than 100 structures.

    New wildfires sweep through California, burning homes Wildfires that have destroyed dozens of buildings and caused at least one death continue to ravage California as a heat wave sweeps the southern part of the state. A fire on the California-Oregon border that destroyed 40 buildings and claimed at least one life since Thursday remained virtually out of control, but a National Weather Service warning of extreme fire danger from heat and winds expired Friday.

    A wildfire in Northern California continued to grow overnight and was threatening nearly 1,000 homes and businesses on early July 3. The blaze started in Yolo County on June 30 and grew to 70,000 acres burning through dry grass and brush, with only five percent containment since it started.

The Holiday fire is 80% contained, with full containment expected by Wednesday, said Mike Eliason, a spokesman for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. Crews gaining on huge Nevada wildfire visible from space RENO, Nev. — More than 600 firefighters slowed the progress Tuesday of a massive wildfire in a remote part of northern Nevada that is generating so much heat and smoke that it's now visible from space.A NASA satellite captured infrared imaging of the fire that has burned nearly 700 square miles (1,813 sq. kilometers) of mostly sage brush, grasses and rangeland — an area almost half the size of the state of Rhode Island, according to the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center.Dubbed the Martin Fire, the National Interagency Fire Center said Tuesday it was the largest wild land fire burning in the United States.

GOLETA, Calif. — The battle against wildfires goes on across the West, but there is good news from one community scorched by flames.

The last mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted in the Goleta area of Southern California where a small but destructive fire burned during the weekend.

An assessment of the burn area found that 13 single-family homes were destroyed, three homes were damaged, and 15 barns, workshops and sheds were lost.
