Nearly two weeks after a Houston doctor was shot to death while riding his bicycle through the Texas Medical Center, police are slated to give an update on the case at 2 p.m.

Dr. Mark Hausknecht, a Houston Methodist cardiologist who once treated former President George H.W. Bush, was killed in broad daylight on Main Street in what police have said was likely a targeted attack.

Since then, authorities have offered scant information on the investigation, save for a slow trickle of video and still photographs from the moments before and after he was gunned down. Video of the suspect taken  around 8:50 a.m., moments after the slaying, shows a man cycling along the side of a street, wearing a blue short-sleeved polo shirt, khaki ball cap and khaki shorts. He was carrying what police have called a large, "fully loaded" olive-green backpack.

"It is highly probable he was targeted," Acevedo said in a text message Thursday morning.

Crime Stoppers offered a $5,000 reward that netted several workable tips — but, as of Wednesday morning, none were enough to crack the case.

Hausknecht earned his degree from Baylor College of Medicine in 1980 and started practicing in Houston seven years later. He biked to work every day, and took exceptional care of himself, according to those who knew him.

The doctor, who also had admitting privileges at Memorial Hermann hospitals, had practiced medicine in Houston for more than three decades. After his death, Bush issued a statement praising him as a "fantastic cardiologist and a good man."

The victim's wife, Dr. Georgia R. Hsieh, released a statement urging the passage of "sensible gun laws." The family held a funeral Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife, Hausknecht is survived by two sons, his mother and three siblings.
