Mike Preston: With C.J. Mosley out, the Ravens need to replace their most valuable defensive player
There are two players the Ravens can't afford to lose, and they lost one Thursday night against the Cincinnati Bengals on national television at Paul Brown Stadium. Pro Bowl middle linebacker C.J. Mosley went down with a bone bruise to his left knee on the Bengals' first drive and had to be carted off the field. There is no definitive time frame for his return. With these injuries, a player is usually out at least ten days, even if he recovers quickly. For most, they are out three to six weeks. The Ravens guarded his injury like it was the latest weapon invented for one of the Pentagon's stealth bombers.

Ravens star inside linebacker C.J. Mosley's left knee injury Thursday night included no ligament damage, coach John Harbaugh said after a 34-23 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Mosley underwent an MRI after leaving the game early, and the injury, which the team said was a bone bruise, "doesn't look to be long term."

"So we'll just have to see how it responds in the next couple of days," Harbaugh said. "Good thing is, we have a long week. I don't know if that means he would be ready for Denver [in Week 3] or not. I have no idea. But I do know there's kind of that kind of damage."

Mosley, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, limped off the field during the defense's first series and was later carted to the locker room. He did not return for the second series, when the Bengals went 16 yards in four plays to open the game's scoring with a 4-yard touchdown pass.
With Mosley out, Ravens inside linebackers Patrick Onwuasor and Kenny Young, who battled throughout the preseason for a starting spot next to Mosley, manned the defense's second level.
"That's your middle linebacker," Harbaugh said. "We got two young guys in there playing. They played hard, they fought, but they didn't play perfect. That's gonna hurt you, for sure. Hurt us with the coverage underneath mostly, a little bit in the run game"
Mosley has started 63 of a possible 65 regular-season games for the Ravens since he was taken No. 17 overall in the 2014 draft. He's set to become a free agent after this season and has maintained his interest in re-signing with the franchise.
