The Florida Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence of the man convicted of killing a St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office sergeant.

Eriese Tisdale killed Sgt. Gary Morales during a traffic stop in 2013.

In an order made public Thursday, the Florida Supreme Court upheld Tisdale's murder conviction.

The state's highest court ruled Tisdale must receive a new sentencing hearing due to changes in the state law that require a jury to vote unanimously in favor of the death penalty before a judge can hand down the sentence.
