OffbeatSchiff: Mueller wanted to 'lock in' Cohen with new plea
Mueller says Manafort breached plea deal by lying
The assertion opens the way to a more severe prison sentence.
Rep. Adam Schiff said Sunday that Michael Cohen’s most recent plea deal indicates to him that special counsel Robert Mueller wanted to “lock in” President Donald Trump’s longtime personal attorney as a key witness in his probe.
“It tells me that he wanted to lock in Michael Cohen,” Schiff told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week.” The California Democrat is in line to chair the House Intelligence Committee when Democrats officially seize the chamber in January.
Michael Cohen to Plead Guilty to Charge in Mueller Investigation
Mr. Cohen, President Trump’s former lawyer, made a surprise appearance on Thursday morning in a Manhattan courtroom to plead guilty to a new criminal charge.
Cohen on Thursday admitted to a criminal charge of making false statements to Congress related to his role in efforts to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. He had pleaded guilty in August to eight other felony counts brought by federal prosecutors in New York, including tax evasion, financial fraud and campaign finance charges.
“There was no reason for that plea, for that additional count. It’s not going to materially affect his sentence,” Schiff said.
“But it does have the benefit of making sure that nothing changes down the road, that there’s no pardon that causes this witness to go south,” he added. “I think the likelihood of that was very remote, but nonetheless, as a prosecutor, you don’t like to take chances.”
Schiff characterized the “broad significance” of Cohen’s plea last week as Mueller securing testimony from a witness “who confirms that, in the same way Michael Flynn was compromised, that the president and his business are compromised."
Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, pleaded guilty in December 2017 to one felony count of lying to the FBI about conversations he had with Russia’s ambassador. He is set to be sentenced later this month.
Michael Cohen, Trump’s Ex-Fixer, Should Get Prison Term of About 4 Years, Prosecutors Say.
Manhattan federal prosecutors made the recommendation to a judge, saying Mr. Cohen “repeatedly used his power and influence for deceptive ends.”
