John P. Corbett once performed his duties as a Milwaukee police sergeant while on work release. He would spend his days working in law enforcement and sleep in a jail cell at night.
On Thursday, Corbett is set to be promoted to captain — a high-ranking leadership position that could put him in charge of an entire police district. His misdemeanor criminal conviction came in 2011, after he got drunk and let his 13-year-old daughter drive his car.

Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales put forward the promotion, which is on the agenda for approval at Thursday evening's Fire and Police Commission meeting.
The civilian commission has the final say on whether to promote Corbett.
At the time of his arrest in 2010 in Fond du Lac County, Corbett's daughter told authorities she had been driving but got lost. By the time the car was pulled over, Corbett was back in the driver's seat.
As part of an agreement with prosecutors, Corbett pleaded guilty to driving drunk with a child in the car. A ticket for refusing to take a breath test was dismissed.
Corbett also was suspended from the Police Department for 60 days as a result of breaking the law.
He was a sergeant at the time and was promoted to lieutenant in 2016.

Milwaukee Police Spokeswoman Sgt. Sheronda Grant said Corbett took responsibility for his alcohol issues and got therapy. He has been sober for eight years, she said.
"He actively educates department members, provides private counseling sessions on alcohol dependency and substance abuse in law enforcement and was a member of the Alcohol Awareness Initiative," she said in an email.
In the years since his arrest, Corbett has earned a master's degree in management, according to Grant.
"He has shown that he is a forward thinking individual," Grant said. "And he possesses great leadership qualities."
