Mets could be an injury away from calling him up Whether or not Tim Tebow has value on the field, Mets GM and Tebow’s former agent Brodie Van Wagenen realizes he has value for the franchise. (Getty) Last month, New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen endorsed Tim Tebow. Tebow had been brought in and promoted in the Mets minor league system under the regime of previous general manager Sandy Alderson, a move widely chided as a publicity stunt to cash in on the popularity of the Heisman Trophy-winning former quarterback.

Here's Mike Francesa on Tuesday responding to a report that Tim Tebow would start the 2019 season at the Mets Triple A affiliate in Syracuse & new GM Brodie

Tim Tebow , 31, is likely to start 2019 at Triple - A Syracuse, but Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen would not rule out the possibility that the former Tebow showed progress in his second minor league season last summer before it was cut short when he broke the hamate bone in his right hand in July.

Van Wagenen revealed Tebow’s immediate future in the Mets organization during an appearance Wednesday on WFAN. Perhaps even more intriguing, Van Wagenen suggests that if Tebow can continue his development at Triple-A and make significant strides, the football player-turned minor leaguer could end up on Mets manager Mickey Callaway’s big-league roster.

“If Tim Tebow is the best offensive player in Triple-A at that point, he’s going to be in Mickey’s lineup,” Van Wagenen said, via the New York Daily News.

Mets have discussed trading Noah Syndergaard to Yankees

Mets have discussed trading Noah Syndergaard to Yankees There’s a new general manager in Flushing, and that new GM is willing to consider dealing with the New York Yankees. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported on Monday that the New York Mets have discussed trading Noah Syndergaard to the Yankees as part of a three-way deal involving Marlins catcher JT Realmuto. Multiple other reporters confirmed the possibility of the trade. #Mets have discussed trade in which they would land J.T. Realmuto in three-team deal with #Yankees and #Marlins, sources tell The Athletic. Not known if Syndergaard involved.

Mets GM : Tim Tebow 'one step away' from major leagues. Tim Tebow will begin the 2019 baseball season in Class AAA , and New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen “If Tim Tebow is the best offensive player in Triple - A at that point, he’s going to be in (manager Mickey Callaway's)

Tim Tebow , 31, is likely to start 2019 at Triple - A Syracuse, but Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen would not rule out the possibility that the former Tebow showed progress in his second minor league season last summer before it was cut short when he broke the hamate bone in his right hand in July

The first-year general manager, it merits noting, previously served as Tebow's agent before joining the Mets organization.

Before the regime change in the Mets’ front office, it had been expected that Tebow would return to the minors and continue his late-blooming professional baseball career. It certainly appears Van Wagenen has raised the bar significantly for Tebow by green-lighting a Triple-A start for the 31-year-old.

In 84 games last season, Tebow slashed at .273/.336/.399 clip with six home runs; certainly not eye-popping numbers, but not horrible stats, either. Further, Tebow batted .317/.348/.429 in June and July before his season ended due to a broken hamate bone in his right hand that required surgery. All told, there was worthwhile, in-season improvement.

Whether or not Tebow actually can accomplish much at the Triple-A level remains to be seen. That said, the notion of Tebow cracking the Mets’ big-league lineup has to be considered a long shot at this point.

The fact that Van Wagenen has stressed — and acted upon — a philosophy centered around the Mets not embarking upon a rebuild arguably makes Tebow’s ascension to the majors that much more unlikely, barring dramatic, eye-popping improvement in Syracuse.
