Capping off her husband's first year in the White House last December, first lady Melania Trump said she wished she could spend the holidays on a deserted island.

A year later, her schedule looks much different.

Since Thanksgiving, she’s visited the Red Cross to assemble comfort kits for American troops. She gave one of her most high-profile speeches on the opioid crisis at Liberty University in Virginia. She’s accompanied her husband to Argentina for the G-20 summit, though she has traveled with him on most of his trips abroad.

Until November 8, Melania Trump ’s marriage provided her with a golden Fifth Avenue fortress, at a price—putting up with her husband’s humiliations and boorishness. From Melania ’s ill-fated campaign appearances to her apparent reluctance to embrace the role of First Lady: how a very private woman

WASHINGTON — Over the past week, Melania Trump , a notoriously private first lady, made three very public decisions: She canceled a trip abroad with She has kept a low profile since. On Tuesday, Mrs. Trump is expected to resurface. The White House said that she would attend Mr. Trump ’s State of

She had a brief pause in events while the nation spent a week honoring former President George H.W. Bush — she paid her respects to him at the Capitol and during his funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.

Trump participated in a “Toys for Tots” holiday toy drive this week and visited troops at military bases in Virginia and Washington, D.C., and aboard the U.S.S. George H.W. Bush. On Thursday, she read to patients at Children’s National Hospital.

During the same time frame in 2017, Trump welcomed the children of military families to the White House. She made a trip to Texas with second lady Karen Pence for an update on hurricane recovery efforts in the region. As is tradition for first ladies, she also visited patients at Children’s National Hospital and took part in a “Toys for Tots” event.

Melania Trump says she does what's 'right,' despite media criticism

Melania Trump says she does what's 'right,' despite media criticism First lady Melania Trump on Wednesday explained that she does what she believes to be the “right” thing, despite any potential disapproval that may come her way as a result.

Melania Trump , who has said she plans to focus on issues affecting children during her time as first lady, visited a youth program at Andrews Air Force Base last Grisham said Melania takes her role seriously and is careful to coordinate with Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary.

She also presumably sees her spouse un-combed. Although it should be noted that Mrs. Trump isn’t actually living under the same White House roof as the blunderbuss president, at least not yet. That’s where Melania Trump continues to reside while her young son completes his school term.

She had been living full-time in the White House just six months then, and her husband's former national security adviser Michael Flynn had pleaded guilty days earlier to lying to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. And when it was reported in January the president had allegedly engaged in an extramarital affair with porn star Stormy Daniels and had paid for her silence in the days before the election, Melania Trump canceled a scheduled trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, citing “scheduling and logistical issues” for her not traveling with her husband.

A year later, the recent guilty pleas of the president's former fixer, Michael Cohen, and former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, mark another significant phase in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison, and Manafort could end up spending the rest of his life in prison for his crimes. George Papadopoulos, a former Trump campaign adviser, recently spent two weeks in prison for lying to the FBI about his contacts with people linked to Russia. In Flynn's case, prosecutors have asked for little to no prison time in exchange for his cooperation. He faces between zero to six months under sentencing guidelines.

Melania Trump's poll numbers plummet

Melania Trump's poll numbers plummet Melania Trump's favorable rating has fallen by double-digits, according to a new CNN poll.

It was in July, just a handful of weeks after Melania Trump and her 11-year-old son, Barron, had moved in to the White House full time, that the first lady started to think about something important on her agenda: Christmas.

If the first lady is worried about what the investigation, which has notched numerous prison sentences and guilty pleas in the last year, means to her husband's presidency, she has not said so publicly.

In interviews over the last few months, Trump has said she offers her husband advice and her “honest opinion” on issues of the day. She has not specified or been asked whether that involves the Russia investigation. She told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in an interview Wednesday that she often doesn’t have time to watch the news because of her busy schedule, but “I know exactly what’s going on.”

Myra Gutin, a first lady historian at Rider University in New Jersey, said it’s typical to see an increase in events attended or hosted by the first lady in their second year compared to their first.

“Many first ladies have picked up the pace during their second year. Usually, there has been a rollout of whatever their initiative is going to be,” Gutin told the Washington Examiner.

Trump unveiled her “Be Best” initiative in May, focusing on combatting the opioid epidemic and cyberbullying.

However, Gutin said that most of their activities in the run-up to the Christmas holiday are usually focused on entertaining and not projects-related. Trump and her husband have hosted numerous holiday receptions in the evenings at the White House in recent weeks and attended the National Christmas Tree lighting.

“That would usually be taking up their time,” Gutin said. “That’s not to say that they haven’t gone out to do advocacy.”

The first lady’s office did not respond to a request for comment about Trump's increased event load.

Trump and her family are heading to Mar-a-Lago, the president's Florida resort, for the holidays. They are expected to spend more than two weeks there. Her most notable outing outside of the resort during their vacation last year was to a Christmas Eve service at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach.

Trump, in Christmas Eve phone call, asks child if they still believe in Santa Claus.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made a series of Christmas Eve phone calls on Monday, punctuated by an exchange the president had seemingly questioning a child’s belief in Santa Claus. “Are you still a believer in Santa?” the president could be heard asking the child over the phone. “Because at 7, it’s marginal, right?” Trump then chuckled before concluding the call with the child. “You just go enjoy yourself,” he said into the receiver. The calls were made in conjunction with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the organization's "Santa tracker.
