Jakarta Races to Open Covid Cemeteries Amid Deadliest Months

Jakarta Races to Open Covid Cemeteries Amid Deadliest Months Indonesia’s capital is racing to open more cemeteries to cope with the coronavirus death toll that has doubled in less than three months despite vaccination efforts. Jakarta’s government bought more than three hectares (7.4 acres) of land to use as dedicated cemeteries for those who have died from Covid-19, said Suzi Marsitawati, who heads the province’s park and forest service. The new sites will accommodate at least 8,000 burial plots, after the existing two cemeteries hit capacity.

L e Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupted on Friday spewing incandescent lava, but authorities did not 'have not raised the alert level in the area.

The conical volcano, located near the city of Jogjakarta on the island of Java, emitted lava more than twenty times in two days and caused hundreds of minor volcanic earthquakes, according to the Indonesian geology agency.

"This morning, lava flows were observed on seven occasions," the agency said in a report on Friday, adding that the longest flow had extended 700 meters to the southwest.

Its alert level, which is the second highest on a scale of four since November, has not been changed, however.

Indonesia to release report into deadly jet crash

Indonesia to release report into deadly jet crash A preliminary report on last month's deadly crash of an Indonesian passenger jet was due to be released Wednesday, as the hunt continued for the plane's still-missing cockpit voice recorder. All 62 passengers and crew, including nearly a dozen children, were killed when the Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 plunged around 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) and crashed into waters off Jakarta on January 9. The 26-year-old plane -- previously flown by US-based Continental Airlines and United Airlines -- came down just four minutes after setting off from the Indonesian capital.

The inhabitants of the region must not approach the volcano within a radius of 5 km around the crater.

Last month, the Merapi spat clouds of ash and smoke up to three kilometers high.

The last major eruption of Merapi dates back to 2010. It had killed more than 300 people and forced more than 280,000 inhabitants to evacuate.

It was the most powerful eruption since that of 1930 which had killed some 1,300 people. An explosion in 1994 also killed 60 people.

Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the friction of tectonic plates causes frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The Southeast Asian archipelago has nearly 130 active volcanoes. Five of them are under special surveillance at the moment, including Sinabung, on the island of Sumatra.
