The Latest: Trump holds 'patriotism' event without Eagles

The Latest: Trump holds 'patriotism' event without Eagles President Donald Trump has held a "patriotism" event at the White House in lieu of a Super Bowl celebration for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles that he canceled. The president said Tuesday that it's time to "explain why young Americans stand for our national anthem." Trump sang along to "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America" during a brief ceremony that included the U.S. Marine Band and Army chorus. Late Monday, Trump nixed the Eagles' visit because of the anticipated low turnout. The president says that the nation needs to remember the "fallen heroes" and that the country stands together "for freedom, we stand together for patri

Trump's "Celebration of America" event lasted roughly 10 minutes. It featured renditions of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America" by the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus.

The event was planned after Trump on Monday night abruptly disinvited the Philadelphia Eagles from attending a White House celebration amid reports that less than 10 players planned to attend.

The White House blamed the team for the cancellation, calling their intention to send a small delegation a "political stunt."

While the expected small turnout was the root cause of the cancellation, Trump highlighted the team's participation in national anthem protests, as well, igniting discussion over the controversial practice.

Eagles Fans Show Up to White House, Man Kneels During Anthem at Trump's America Celebration

Eagles Fans Show Up to White House, Man Kneels During Anthem at Trump's America Celebration The White House disinvited the Eagles from their Super Bowl victory and held a "Celebration of America" ceremony instead on Tuesday afternoon. Despite the Eagles' absence, a handful of fans came to the celebration at the White House. A few wore Eagles jerseys and hats, while another fan kneeled during the playing of the national anthem. Whether or not the fans in attendance knew much about the Eagles seems to be up in the air.

The president has frequently lashed out at the NFL for allowing players to protest during the national anthem without punishment, and prompted a new league policy requiring those on the field to stand during the song.

No Eagles players kneeled during the national anthem last season, but a few players rose their fists during the song prior to each game to raise awareness of social justice issues, such as police brutality.

Multiple players said after the Super Bowl that they would not attend the White House ceremony if they were invited.

In the wake of the cancellation, some of those players, including Torrey Smith and Chris Long, were critical of those who framed Trump's decision around national anthem protests.

Picking Another National Anthem Fight Makes Trump Look Like A Loser .
It's simply egotistical for President Trump to even imply the Eagles did something wrong because they 'disagreed' with the president. The debate over the national anthem protests reignited last month when the NFL announced that they will be enforcing a new policy that requires its athletes to stand or face fines. What began with a handful of players (most famously Colin Kaepernick) became a heated political feud between President Trump and the entire NFL when he referred to kneelers as a “son of a b-tch” during a rally last September, causing hundreds of players to kneel during the anthem for the rest of the season.
