The Bernie Sanders 2020 campaign is planning to base its team in dual headquarters, according to one of his top strategists.

One of Sanders’ operations will be in his hometown of Burlington, Vt., where he based his first presidential campaign. The Vermont senator served as mayor there for eight years in the 1980s.

Sanders signs pledge to run for president as Democrat

The move came in response to a rule passed by the Democratic National Committee last year that anyone seeking the party's 2020 presidential nomination must do so as a Democrat. That rule change was seen by Sanders's supporters as a direct response to the Vermont sen ator, who identifies as a democratic socialist and has long refused to consider himself a member of the party despite caucusing with Democrats in the Senate. To be sure, Sanders filed to run for president last month as a Democrat.

The Sanders 2020 team also will have a base in Washington, D.C.

“Co-locating our headquarters in Vermont and Washington, D.C., allows us to attract the most talented staff and maximize travel efficiency,” said Jeff Weaver, a senior adviser to Sanders who served as his campaign manager in 2016.

Sanders already has the D.C. space up and running, while a 2020 Burlington headquarters has not yet opened, the campaign said.

In 2016, some of Sanders’ senior aides worked out of a rowhouse in D.C. in addition to the Burlington office.

One of Sanders’ rivals is also locating her campaign in two cities: Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) is basing her 2020 headquarters in Baltimore, with a second office in Oakland, Calif.
