'It's a bit much': Beto drags out his 2020 tease at South by Southwest The Texas Democrat confirmed more than a week ago that he'd made his decision on a potential run for president. He just won’t say what it is. Instead, the politician who sowed his entire persona on a thread of authenticity — crisscrossing Texas while eschewing pollsters and political consultants in his Senate run last year — is now manufacturing suspense. “It’s a bit much,” said one Democratic strategist who has spoken with O’Rourke about working on the 2020 campaign.

Beto O'Rourke to leap into 2020 Democratic presidential race Former Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke will launch his 2020 presidential bid on Thursday, ending months of speculation about whether he would join the sprawling field of Democrats vying for the chance to run against President Donald Trump. O'Rourke, who gained a national following with his long-shot election battle against U.S. Senator Ted Cruz last year, will make his announcement via video on social media at 7:30 a.m. EDT (1130 GMT), a source close to the campaign said. He is expected to immediately set out on a campaign swing through Iowa, which holds the first Democratic nominating contest in February 2020.

O'Rourke's campaign declined to comment, and O'Malley Dillon did not return requests for comment.

The New York Times previously reported that O'Rourke and O'Malley Dillon met at South by Southwest to discuss the role. Four days into O'Rourke's campaign, O'Malley Dillon remains undecided, the source said.

"I'm working with an extraordinary team right now, some of whom helped me in the amazing Senate race that we ran in Texas, some of whom are new to this campaign," O'Rourke said Sunday. "I am in talks with someone who might be very excited to lead this effort, but at the same time that I say that, I want to give my thanks to the team that has started this up and allowed us to have such a strong start three-and-a-half days into this campaign."

Asked how many people he has offered the job to, O'Rourke said, "I have made one offer."

O'Malley Dillon was the deputy campaign manager of President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and a top political consultant for Justin Trudeau in Canada. She is also a former executive director of the Democratic National Committee and recently agreed to lead a new Democratic data exchange operation.
