House Democrat calls it 'unconstitutional' to cite God in hearing oaths Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) said this week that requiring witnesses testifying before Congress to affirm an oath to God is "unconstitutional.""It's unconstitutional to require a witness in congressional testimony to affirm an oath to a deity they may not even believe in or to affirm an oath to a singular deity when you might be a polytheistic Hindu for example," Huffman said during an interview on The Freedom From Religion Foundation's " Freethought Matters" program. require(["medianetNativeAdOnArticle"], function (medianetNativeAdOnArticle) { medianetNativeAdOnArticle.getMedianetNativeAds(true); }); "It's just preposterous.

The hard-line group has elected Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) to be the new Freedom Caucus chief, replacing the current chairman, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.).

Meadows, a founding Freedom Caucus member and one of President Donald Trump’s closest allies on Capitol Hill, will step down on Oct. 1 but is expected to remain on the group’s board.

“I’m grateful for the trust of my colleagues in selecting me to serve as the next chairman of the House Freedom Caucus,” Biggs said in a statement on Tuesday.

Trump has awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to pro basketball great Jerry West, formerly of the Los Angeles Lakers, during a White House ceremony. Trump says West "richly deserved" the medal for his years as a player, general manager and supporter of the nation's war veterans. The 81-year-old West noted his humble beginnings growing up in West Virginia and where sports has taken him, saying "it never ceases to amaze me the places you can go in this world chasing a basketball.

Andrew Steven Biggs (born November 7, 1958) is an American politician and a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Arizona's 5th congressional district.

“The Freedom Caucus has revolutionized Capitol Hill because our members endeavor to keep our promises to the American people. Freedom Caucus members have shown that they will stand for principle over politics — every time.”

The Freedom Caucus, a band of roughly 30 conservative bomb throwers who spent years as a thorn in the side of leadership, has played a key role in some of the most high-profile fights in the House GOP, from the ouster of John Boehner as speaker to the government shutdown earlier this year. And with Meadows at its helm during Trump’s first two years in office, the group wielded even more power.

But with House Republicans now in the minority, the group’s influence has significantly waned. The Freedom Caucus has also come under fire for being unswervingly loyal to Trump, prompting one of its members, Rep. Justin Amash (I-Mich.), to quit the group earlier this year.

Andy Biggs will serve as the third chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, after the group of roughly three dozen hard-line conservatives elected him to take over its leadership effective Oct. 1. The sophomore congressman will replace North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows next month — a fall leadership transition that Meadows had long been planning. Meadows has served as the group’s chairman for the past two and a half years following the two-year tenure of Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, the founding chairman. require(["medianetNativeAdOnArticle"], function (medianetNativeAdOnArticle) { medianetNativeAdOnArticle.

The House Freedom Caucus is a congressional caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. According to the group's official Facebook page, "The House Freedom Caucus gives a voice to countless Americans who feel that Washington does not represent them.

Meadows was initially expected to pass the baton to the next chairman earlier this year, but Freedom Caucus members decided to punt on leadership elections until the fall to give themselves time to settle into the new Congress.

“I’ve been honored and humbled to serve as chairman of the Freedom Caucus for the last two and a half years, and I can’t think of a better person to pass the torch to than Andy Biggs,” Meadows said in a statement.

Biggs came to Congress in 2017 and sits on the House Judiciary Committee, where Republican members serve as Trump’s first line of defense against possible impeachment.

Mark Sanford claims Trump’s reelection team is ‘scared’ about his primary challenge .
“I think somebody in his (Trump’s) organization is scared, which is why you squash these nominating contests,” Sanford said.
