Top moments from Tuesday's Democratic debate

Top moments from Tuesday's Democratic debate Tuesday's debate in the key battleground state of Ohio was the first opportunity for Democratic candidates to gather on stage since the announcement of the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. The focus shifted from former Vice President Biden to Sen. Elizabeth Warren for attacks from 2020 rivals, which is surely in response to her mounting support in national polls. As with previous debates, personal attacks were on display despite some calls for civility.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, one of the most influential voices among young liberals and a rising Democratic star, plans to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for president and appear with him at a rally on Saturday, according to two people with knowledge of her plans.

The surprise endorsement is a political coup for Sanders, 78, who has been fading in the polls and has faced growing questions about his age and health. Before Tuesday’s Democratic debate, he had been sidelined from the campaign trail for two weeks by a heart attack.

'I am back,' Bernie Sanders tells supporters at NYC rally Storming past questions about his health, Bernie Sanders vowed that he's "more ready than ever" to fight for a political revolution — with a little help from new friends — at a rally Saturday that drew thousands to a New York City park. The rally offered a pointed reminder to skeptics in both political parties that the 78-year-old democratic socialist is still very much a force in the 2020 presidential race. His campaign, he said, was forced to close the gates on many more people who were trying to enter the Queens park just across the river from Manhattan.

“We’re looking forward to Saturday,” said Corbin Trent, a spokesman for Ocasio-Cortez. Sanders teased the rally at Tuesday night’s presidential debate, saying he would have a “special guest” appearing with him in New York.

Another person with knowledge of the congresswoman’s plans, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a decision that has not yet been announced publicly, confirmed the endorsement. Sanders campaign officials declined to comment.

The endorsement could be a blow for Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who, like Sanders, is running on a platform of sweeping liberal change and who has emphasized her role as a female pioneer. Ocasio-Cortez had worked as a volunteer organizer for Sanders’s 2016 presidential bid; she was recruited to run for Congress in 2018 by Justice Democrats, a group that grew out of the Sanders campaign.

Analysis: Warren still growing into front-runner status

Analysis: Warren still growing into front-runner status WESTERVILLE, Ohio (AP) — The question was inevitable. Elizabeth Warren's answer was the same. And her rivals seized on it. For the second consecutive debate, Warren refused to say whether middle-class Americans would pay higher taxes under her proposed Medicare for All plan. It was a glaring dodge for a candidate who has risen to the top of the Democratic field by unveiling detailed policy proposals and selling them with a folksy flair. And it was one of nearly a half a dozen issues where Warren found herself defending the broad ambition she has laid out to remake the American economy and rebalance the nation's wealth.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Representative Ilhan Omar endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont for the Democratic presidential nomination on Tuesday, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio - Cortez will endorse Mr. Sanders at a rally this weekend, according to his campaign.

Few figures hold as much sway in the party’s liberal wing as Ocasio-Cortez, whose 2018 primary win over then-Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) sent political shock waves across the country and made her an overnight star. Sanders recently was spotted meeting with Ocasio-Cortez in Vermont.

Her backing was a sought-after prize in the Democratic primary, and it was widely assumed that she would endorse either Sanders or Warren, the most liberal figures in the contest.

Ocasio-Cortez plans to appear with Sanders at a “Bernie’s Back” rally Saturday in Queens, just outside the boundaries of Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional district.

It was not immediately clear what the other three members of “The Squad,” a group of four liberal congresswomen, planned to do. Media representatives for the tightknit group of lawmakers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

President Trump has attacked the women, at one point suggesting they should “go back” to their own countries — even though they are American citizens — and has sought to make them the face of the Democratic Party. He recently held a rally in the district of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), another member of the group.

Sanders and Warren have been battling for the support of the women, holding individual meetings with them, co-sponsoring their legislation and wishing them well on social media. On Tuesday, Sanders unveiled legislation with Omar to enact a universal school meals program.

The other two members of the group are Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts. All four members of the group were elected to the House in 2018.

Sanders raised $25.3 million during the third quarter of the year, topping Warren — if only by a little — and every other Democratic competitor. While he has struggled to gain traction in the polls, he has stockpiled cash for the crucial fall stretch, ending September with $33.7 million in his campaign accounts.

Steyer calls climate change 'most important international problem we're facing' .
Billionaire businessman and Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer said climate change is one of the biggest threats facing America, right up there with Russia and election tampering. Speaking during the fourth Democratic primary debate Tuesday, Steyer said climate change is "the most important international problem we're facing" and chastised debate organizers for failing to yet bring up the topic more than an hour and a half into the event.
