WASHINGTON — Nancy Pelosi extended her hand and Donald Trump refused to shake it.

Even before Trump uttered the first word of his State of the Union speech, there was clear tension between the president and the House Speaker who has been leading his impeachment.

A year after Pelosi clapped back at the president in a moment that went viral, Trump barely acknowledged her even though she introduced him at the State of the Union and stood behind him during the speech. He turned his back as she reached her hand out to greet him.

The awkward exchange between Pelosi and Trump at the start of the speech was the first time they've met since she stood up and walked out of an Oct. 16 meeting on Syria in the White House.
