One of Tuesday’s endorsements went to Tiffany Cabán, who made waves with an unexpectedly strong run against the machine favorite in last year’s Democratic primary for Queens district attorney. Since then, she’s done a stint working for WFP and is now running in the 22nd Council district covering Astoria, East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights that’s currently repped by term-limited Councilman Costa Constantinides.

Sandy Nurse scored WFP’s endorsement to rep the Council’s 37th district covering Cypress Hills, Bushwick, Brownsville and East New York, Brooklyn. Earlier this year, her progressive platform gained a lot of buzz before she was kicked out of a special election for the seat due to a technicality.

The WFP is also supporting Amanda Farías for the open 18th Council district covering the South Bronx. The nonprofit director nearly beat Councilman Rubén Díaz Sr. in the 2017 primary, and the incumbent recently said he’s retiring from politics.

Jennifer Gutiérrez got WFP’s endorsement for the 37th Council district covering Williamsburg, Bushwick and Ridgewood, Brooklyn. She’s currently chief of state to term-limited incumbent Councilman Antonio Reynoso.

State Sen. Jessica Ramos (D-Queens) also endorsed the four candidates.

“Next year, we have an opportunity to build a strong coalition of new city leaders who will fight for their communities, not govern in response to special interests,” Sochie Nnaemeka, WFP’s director for New York State, said in a statement. The party "is building a slate of progressive champions who we know will put working people, people of color and immigrants first — because they come from these communities.”

The endorsements come as progressives are energized in the wake of this year’s controversial budget vote, which activists say did not go far enough to reform the NYPD.

Out of 51 Council seats, 35 won’t have an incumbent seeking reelection due to either term limits or an early resignation.

That appears to give the WFP plenty of opportunity to build on its track record of helping lefties into office early in their careers. Current state Attorney General Letitia James was endorsed by the WFP for Council in 2003 and current Public Advocate Jumaane Williams got WFP’s support for his 2009 Council run, among other examples.
