Four days later, Tanden's nomination appears all but doomed, as the White House continues to express confidence in her chances publicly while scouting for replacements in the event they have to pull her nomination.

Welcome to Joe Manchin's Washington.

Joe Manchin Vows to Protect Byrd Rule as Joe Biden Defends Minimum Wage Hike

Joe Manchin Vows to Protect Byrd Rule as Joe Biden Defends Minimum Wage Hike The West Virginia senator said he would protect the rule governing what is allowed in budget reconciliation bills come "hell or high water."Speaking to CNN last night, the Democratic senator for West Virginia said he had told the president about his position "straight up" and claimed Biden was fully aware that he was first and foremost "fighting to defend" the rule, which says proposals in a budget reconciliation bill must have a direct impact on the budget.

See more of Senator Joe Manchin III on Facebook. They need more direct aid in the form of targeted checks. They need to know their unemployment benefits won’t run out in a few weeks. I will not let partisan games and political posturing hold this essential assistance hostage.

As a Senator , Joe Manchin is committed to bringing this same spirit of bipartisanship to Washington . As he has done throughout his entire life, he Senator Manchin currently serves as the ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and also serves on the Senate Committee on Appropriations, the Senate Committee on Armed Services, and the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs - four critical committees that tackle the important work of addressing our nation's energy needs, overseeing discretionary spending, standing up for our veterans, and defending.

With the Senate split 50-50 and Vice President Kamala Harris in place to break ties, Democrats have operational control over the chamber.

But the truth of the matter is that Manchin, the most conservative Democrat in the Senate caucus, has more power -- to direct the path of legislation and the fate of nominees -- than even Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. And with his move on the Tanden nomination, it appears as though Manchin is both willing and able to use his power to get what he wants.

It's not a lone example, either. Manchin has voiced his opposition to trying to include Biden's $15 minimum wage proposal into the Covid-19 relief bill -- a major hurdle in liberals' hopes of doing so. And Manchin's public opposition to removing the legislative filibuster effectively killed any momentum for Democrats to even attempt it.

Manchin forces Democrats to hit the brakes, but he’s not in the driver’s seat

Manchin forces Democrats to hit the brakes, but he’s not in the driver’s seat Even with the Democrats' trifecta control of Washington in both chambers of Congress and the White House, every piece of the Democratic agenda faces one key question: What does Joe Manchin think of it? © Provided by Washington Examiner The West Virginia senator, who is one of the most conservative Democrats in the Senate and the only statewide Democrat who was elected in a state that President Biden lost by 39 points, effectively has veto power over any measures that Democrats want to pass without Republican support in a 50-50 divided Senate.

The Senate contingent led by Texas senator Ted Cruz, and Missouri senator Josh Hawley, faced demands from Democrats to resign or be expelled from the Senate . Mr Cruz and the others condemned the violence but still objected to the certification of the results. They argued that large numbers of voters, including WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump has increasingly isolated himself in the White House, relying on a small group of diehard loyalists and lashing out at those who dare to cross him, including Vice President Mike Pence, said four sources familiar with the matter.

Manchin is, unapologetically, the most conservative Democrat in the Senate caucus. And he's on the record as: Read More . * Opposing the elimination of the Senate filibuster. * Opposing adding seats to the Supreme Court. Which makes Manchin a very, very powerful figure in Washington over the next few years -- especially if his party winds up sweeping both seats in Georgia next month. And makes it impossible to realistically imagine that any sort of progressive dream will be coming true no matter the outcome in the Peach State.

Manchin made clear as far back as late November 2020 that he understood this unique moment, his role as a decider and his desire for the ideological center to rise again.

"I think we have a golden opportunity to bring the country back together and for us to work in the middle," Manchin told The New York Times late last year. He added:

"It behooves everybody to start working together. If they don't, it doesn't take many of us to say, 'Guys, we've given all of you a chance. We haven't done our job for the last 10 years, and we're going to start.'"

His opposition to Tanden then is Manchin asserting his influence -- and making sure everyone from Schumer to the Democratic Party's liberal wing (in the Senate and outside of it) understand just how much power he currently holds.

The Point: Manchin is in the catbird's seat to push his centrist agenda. And he knows it.

How Dems Can Turn Filibuster Reform Into the ‘Moderate’ Option .
The imperative to pass a new voting rights act – and renew Biden’s child allowance – could erode moderate resistance to weakening the filibuster. But once reconciliation is done, acrimony may follow.
