Office of Management and Budget director nominee Neera Tanden previously sent a tweet taking issue with the salary of former CEO of pharmaceutical company Mylan, Heather Bresch, who is the daughter of Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV).

Tanden's confirmation has been cast into doubt due to opposition from lawmakers, including Manchin.

"I am working with President Biden to find the extra votes so she can be passed," he told reporters during a news conference in New York, mentioning Democratic Sen.

Those opposed to her taking the position have referenced tweets she sent about lawmakers, criticizing figures from both sides of the aisle. Tanden has apologized for these comments and said she can "work with anyone."

In August 2016, Tanden shared a screengrab of an article about Bresch which focused on a significant rise in her pay while at Mylan.

It highlighted that the company's board said this was justified as she had "contributed significantly to the company's growth in recent years."

Tanden wrote: "The idea that only CEO contributes to a company's growth and not all employees is really pernicious."

Manchin said last week that he will not vote in support of Tanden's nomination, citing comments made against lawmakers.

He said in a statement: "I have carefully reviewed Neera Tanden's public statements and tweets that were personally directed towards my colleagues on both sides of the aisle from Senator [Bernie] Sanders to Senator [Mitch] McConnell and others.

"I believe her overtly partisan statements will have a toxic and detrimental impact on the important working relationship between members of Congress and the next director of the Office of Management and Budget."

He added: "For this reason, I cannot support her nomination. As I have said before, we must take meaningful steps to end the political division and dysfunction that pervades our politics. At a time of grave crisis, it is more important than ever that we chart a new bipartisan course that helps address the many serious challenges facing our nation."

Susan Collins Deals (Likely) Death Blow to Tanden Nomination

Susan Collins Deals (Likely) Death Blow to Tanden Nomination Senate moderates are poised to sacrifice Biden’s OMB pick on the altar of civility — but the White House isn’t relinquishing Tanden just yet.During the Trump era, Joe Manchin repeatedly bucked his party on high-profile votes, but in almost all of these cases, his vote was not decisive. For example, the West Virginia Democrat backed Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court — but only after enough Republican moderates had declared their support for Trump’s nominee to ensure his ascension. Meanwhile, Manchin toed the party line on the Trump Tax Cuts and Obamacare repeal.

Other Senators, such as Susan Collins (R-ME), have also publicly stated opposition to Tanden.

The White House has stood by her, with Press Secretary Jen Psaki having defended Tanden and described her as an "accomplished policy expert."

President Joe Biden also previously said he thought they would be able to get enough votes to have her confirmed.

Newsweek has contacted Manchin's office for comment.
