Georgia's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger Defends Controversial Election Law
On March 25, Georgia enacted an overhaul of it’s election law, which includes several restrictions such as a shortened time frame to request absentee ballots, a ban on most out-of-precinct provisional ballots and limitations on drop boxes.Trump loyalists are still angry at Raffensperger for pushing back against the former President’s false claims that there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election. When Trump told the Georgia election official he just wanted “to find” the 11,780 votes he needed to win Georgia, Raffensperger refused to comply—saying “we believe our numbers are right,” the Washington Post reported.
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Thursday recommended that Congress ban political campaigns from using pre-checked boxes on their websites that would automatically register donors to give recurring contributions.
The FEC recommendation came in the form of afrom the six-member body, which is divided evenly between Republican and Democratic commissioners. The FEC said Congress should amend current law to mandate "affirmative consent" before donors are enrolled in a recurring contribution program.
"The Commission's experience strongly suggests that many contributors are unaware of the 'pre-checked' boxes and are surprised by the already completed transactions appearing on account statements," the FEC said in its recommendation.

President Joe Biden will propose a ban on menthol cigarettes, which have long been a target of anti-smoking advocates and civil rights groups.The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the administration also will seek to ban menthol and other flavors in mass-produced cigars, including small cigars popular with young people.
The recommendation follows athat found that the Trump campaign in 2020 broadly utilized pre-checked recurring donations boxes. The campaign ultimately had to refund more than $122 million to online supporters.
Both parties have used pre-checked recurring donations boxes, with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee using it as well.
The FCC's recommendation has no force of law, a reflection of the agency's inability to unilaterally change election laws.
