Car-free San Francisco streets: Residents debate reopening
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — For Vanessa Gregson, the four-lane highway that borders the beach along San Francisco's Pacific Ocean is now an automobile-free sanctuary where she can blissfully ride her bicycle and enjoy the quiet. “You hear the beach. You hear the waves,” said Gregson. “You feel like you’re in nature, and you’re in San Francisco.” Like cities from Paris to New York that shut roads to motorists when the coronavirus hit, environmentally friendly San Francisco closed miles of streets to automobiles so people could exercise and socialize safely.

‘Dr. Beach’ says powerful Hawaii shoreline is 2021's best
HONOLULU (AP) — Cruising along the west side of Hawaii's Big Island, the landscape is dominated by ancient volcanic flows and jagged shorelines. Then you get to Hapuna Beach. There, the contrast of black lava rock, white sand and blue water means you have arrived in paradise — at least that's what “Dr. Beach” believes. “It’s like an oasis,” said Stephen Leatherman, who has been ranking U.S. beaches on his annual list under the alias “Dr. Beach” for three decades. The sand "looks super white there because of the black lava beside it,” he said. "I think the contrast makes you think, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve never seen sand so white in my life.

It's no surprise that the first lady would choose Rehoboth to spend her birthday. She's been candid that she pushed Biden to buy the $2.7 million home in 2017, after leaving the vice presidency and their signing an $8 million book deal.
Jill Biden getting Delaware beach day for her 70th birthday
WASHINGTON (AP) — Jill Biden is getting a day at the beach for her 70th birthday. President Joe Biden and his wife were heading to their Delaware beach house Wednesday evening to help the first lady celebrate that personal milestone on Thursday. The trip makes for a rare midweek getaway from the White House by a president. It will also be the president's first visit to the couple's Rehoboth Beach home since he took office in January. The Bidens were expected to be back at the White House on Friday. Jill Biden, a longtime community college English professor, recently finished virtually teaching a course for Northern Virginia Community College.
She told Vogue magazine last year that Biden promised her, "when I write my book, I’ll buy you a beach house."
"I wanted it to be the kind of place where you can come in in your wet bathing suit and bare feet and I can just take the broom and brush out the sand," she said in the March 2020. "And that’s what this is. Everything’s easy."
Above the front door, the article said, is a plaque reading, "PROMISE KEPT."
Their vacation home is just blocks from the Atlantic Ocean and comes with a swimming pool overlooking Cape Henlopen State Park, where Biden's helicopter landed on Wednesday evening so he could join his wife for her birthday getaway.
But since all good things must come to an end, the Bidens are scheduled to return to Washington on Friday.
Jill Biden to meet the Queen .
Almost five months into her new job, Jill Biden is still revealing what kind of first lady she wants to be, but one thing is already clear: you can call her "Jill."Biden has insisted at just about every turn that people address her by her first name. She means it -- people actually call her that or, sometimes, "Dr. B." The familiar approachability is part of the Biden narrative, and an aspect of her personality into which she leans hard.
