Local leaders build pressure on Biden to cancel student loans
Local leaders are stepping up the pressure on President Biden to tackle the issue of student debt by taking official action in their own jurisdictions that they hope will urge him to forgive some college loans.Washington, D.C., and several other city governments have passed resolutions that call on the federal government to act on student loan cancellations. The moves come as Biden laid out new measures towards economic equity this week, an issue that student loan advocates say could be tackled in part by canceling student loans. The resolution D.C.
The Northwestern University student government overwhelmingly passed a resolution for the recusal of the school’s chairman of the Board of Trustees from its presidential search committee because of his conservative views.
“J. Landis Martin donated $30,000 to ‘Trump Victory,’ a PAC supporting Donald Trump’s campaign for President of the United States in 2016,”“Donald Trump has demonstrated significant ableism, sexism, racism, xenophobia, and homophobia and transphobia, both prior to and during his presidency.”
The resolution goes on to explain that financial support of PACs or candidates “are made primarily to ‘support the candidate that shares their views.’”
Peruvian voters face choice between 2 polarizing populists
LIMA, Peru (AP) — Peruvian voters will choose between two polarizing populist candidates Sunday in a presidential runoff held as the coronavirus pandemic continues to batter the Andean country and festering anger has led to fears of more political stability. Political novice Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori, making her third run for the presidency, have both promised COVID-19 vaccines for all and other strategies to alleviate the health emergency that has killed more than 180,000 people and pushed millions into poverty. The election follows a statistical revision from Peru's government that more than doubled the death toll previously acknowledged by officials.
“Northwestern University students are a diverse population that identify with many of the groups that Donald Trump harmed during his campaign and presidency,” the resolution continued. “The 2020 ASG survey demonstrates that the median student at Northwestern identifies with a Left political ideology.”
“The conservative political ideology of Donald Trump, including those that support him, do not align with the views of the average Northwestern undergraduate,” the resolution concluded.
The resolution passed with a 17-1 vote, the lone nay vote coming from the College Republicans senator, David Grow. Grow said he voted against it because “the legislation does not account for Republicans on campus.”
The Conservative Disinformation Campaign Against Nikole Hannah-Jones
Only by identifying these campaigns as disinformation can we counter them, two UNC professors write. But then her tenure case reached the university’s conservative majority Board of Trustees, where it apparently lingered without action in a subcommittee. In the end, the board took the unprecedented step of refusing to hear the case at all. When the news became public, there was a large public outcry. Hannah-Jones’ legal team gave the Board of Trustees until Friday to reconsider tenure.
The resolution also demands Martin’s position on the committee remain unfilled. If it must be filled, the resolution demands the new candidate be chosen by recommendation of the Associated Student Government executive board.
Martin, a successful businessman and Northwestern alumnus, wasman on the Northwestern Board of Trustees in 2017. Martin was first elected to the board in 1999, rising to vice-chairman before his election to chairman.
Martin has donated millions of dollars to his alma mater over the years, including a $15 million donation to support Northwestern Athletics and Recreation. As a result, the university’s renovated soccer and lacrosse field, Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, was named in his honor.
But Martin has also been a controversial figure on campus for his conservative views, most notably after the school’s student-run newspaper, The Daily Northwestern, noting he has a history of supporting GOP politicians such as Lindsey Graham, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Jeb Bush.
Boston schools chair resigns over racially charged texts
BOSTON (AP) — The chair of the Boston School Committee resigned Monday amid criticism of racially charged texts she shared with another member of the committee disparaging families of students, city officials announced Tuesday. The texts were sent during a committee meeting last October as the board was considering a proposal to temporarily drop the entrance test requirement to the city’s exam schools. “Best school committee meeting ever. I’m trying not to cry,” school committee Chair Alexandra Oliver-Davila texted to fellow committee member Lorna Rivera, according to the texts obtained by the Boston Globe.
Northwestern University did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
