Newsom's nightmare: How one November day fueled the recall SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — On a single day last November, two events helped set the course for just the second recall election against a governor in California history: Gov. Photos of the maskless dinner showed the Democratic governor going against what he had been urging for months to combat the coronavirus: don’t gather in groups, keep your distance, wear a mask.

California’s governor , Gavin Newsom , has prevailed in a rare recall election that left him battling for his political life. The Associated Press has projected the results about 45 minutes after polls closed, signalling that voters have eschewed the choice to replace Newsom with his most popular challenger, the rightwing radio host Larry Elder. While the race was called by the AP on Tuesday night, the vote count is not yet final, and election officials have 30 days to count all the ballots.

The recall election was an attempt to replace Newsom because of how the governor dealt with the "homelessness crisis, high taxes and cost of living, immigration, and rationing water and energy use," Insider's Lauren Firas previously reported.

"I am humbled and grateful to the millions of Californians who exercised their right to vote," said Newsom.

"Democracy is not a football," he added. "You don't just throw it around. It's more like an antique vase. You can drop it and smash it into a million little pieces."

Allegations fly as recall vote looms for California’s Newsom

Allegations fly as recall vote looms for California’s Newsom LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a blitz of TV ads and a last-minute rally, California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom urged voters Sunday to turn back a looming recall vote that could remove him from office, while leading Republican Larry Elder broadly criticized the media for what he described as double standards that insulated Newsom from criticism and scrutiny throughout the contest. The sunny, late-summer weekend was a swirl of political activity, as candidates held rallies, continued bus tours and cluttered the TV airwaves with advertising offering their closing arguments in advance of the election that concludes Tuesday.

On his first trip to the West Coast since his election, President Joe Biden implored attendees of a rally in Long Beach to vote no in the upcoming California recall election against Gov . Gavin Newsom . If more than 50% of voters vote "yes" to recalling Newsom , he will be replaced by the opposing candidate who garners the most support. In the event that he is recalled, county officials would have 30 days to count votes and on the 38th day, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber would certify the election results.

The latest: Gavin Newsom is projected to prevail in his effort to remain in office. Newsom was fairly popular with voters overall, with a small majority approving of his handling of the job as governor and a similar majority saying he is “in touch” with the needs and concerns of Californians. California voters’ views on the pandemic tilted toward those of Newsom and Democrats on the pandemic and other issues, with about 7 in 10 supporting requiring students to wear masks while in school and about 6 in 10 saying that getting vaccinated is a “public health responsibility” rather than a “personal choice.”

Newsom repeatedly thanked California voters and warned that "Trumpism is not defeated in this country."

"Tonight, I'm humbled, grateful, but resolved in the spirit of my political hero, Robert Kennedy, to make more gentle the life of this world," Newsom said. He closed his remarks by once again thanking voters for rejecting the recall attempt.

The leading GOP candidate, Larry Elder, has yet to respond.
