Son of man killed by Georgia trooper seeks federal inquiry

Son of man killed by Georgia trooper seeks federal inquiry SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The son of a Black man killed last year by a Georgia state trooper attempting a traffic stop over a broken tail light said Monday he will march across a stretch of southeast Georgia in hopes of getting federal authorities to take up the case. Brook Bacon is trying to get renewed attention to the slaying of his father, 60-year-old Julian Lewis, nearly three months after a grand jury in rural Screven County declined to indict the trooper who shot him in the head. “That can't be left unchallenged,” Bacon told reporters during an online news conference with his attorneys.

A grand jury indicted a notoriously violent former Louisiana police officer on Thursday for the beating of a Black motorist in 2019 that left the man with a broken jaw and broken ribs.

The indictment comes after the Associated Press obtained and published the video of Brown beating Aaron Larry Bowman with a flashlight as part of an investigation into a culture of coverups within Louisiana State Police.

The AP wrote that Brown was "perhaps the Louisiana State Police's most prolifically violent trooper in recent years," having amassed 23 uses of force since 2015, 19 on Black people. He faces state charges in two other violent arrests of Black motorists.
