Donald Trump Peddled His 'Stolen Election' Story. The Job was to Promote GOP Candidates

Donald Trump Peddled His 'Stolen Election' Story. The Job was to Promote GOP Candidates In this daily series, Newsweek explores the steps that led to the January 6 Capitol Riot. On Saturday, December 5, Donald Trump flew to Valdosta, Georgia, to speak at a rally to support two Republican party candidates for the Senate, Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue. It was his first rally since the election, a month earlier. The point of Trump's trip to Georgia was to encourage voting in the January 5 runoff, a race that would decide the balance of power in Washington. Republicans needed only one victory in Georgia to maintain their majority.

Republican Gov . Brian Kemp of Georgia says he’ll make a clear contrast between himself and Democrat Stacey Abrams as he gears up for a potential titanic rematch in 2022. But the Republican Governors Association (RGA) is firmly backing Kemp , highlighting that "over the past four years, Governor Kemp has exhibited courageous leadership for Georgians and guided his state through a turbulent time." Hours after Abrams declared her candidacy, Trump predicted that she’ll be defeated again in 2022 before adding that "it will be hard to do with Brian Kemp , because the MAGA base will

Trump vented fury at the Republican governor of Georgia , Brian Kemp , a one-time political ally of the president, who has resisted calls to join Trump’s attempts to overturn the result in the state. “Your governor could stop it very easily if he knew what the hell he was doing,” Trump told the crowd. Trump pushed Kemp to convene a special session of the state legislature in a bid to send Trump backing presidential electors when the electoral college convenes on 14 December.

"Governor Kemp has a proven track record of fighting the radical left to put hardworking Georgians first, while Perdue is best known for ducking debates, padding his stock portfolio during a pandemic, and losing winnable races," the statement said.

Last week, Kemp told reporters in Georgia that Perdue previously said he wasn't planning to challenge him, saying that, "I hope he'll be a man of his word, but again that's not anything I can control," Politico reported.

Perdue lost a bid for re-election to Democrat Jon Ossoff earlier this year during a high-stakes runoff race. Following that loss, Perdue was recruited by Trump to challenge Kemp and is reportedly in talks to receive official fundraising and endorsement support from the former president, according to Politico.

"Trump's endorsement matters to Republican voters and he's going to be helpful because this race is important to him," one Perdue adviser told the news outlet.

David Perdue Will Indeed Primary Governor Brian Kemp in Georgia: Reports

David Perdue Will Indeed Primary Governor Brian Kemp in Georgia: Reports The former senator was recruited to run against Kemp by Donald Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to help purge the incumbent GOP governor. The announcement, expected to be delivered via video on Monday, comes days after Democrat Stacey Abrams announced she would run for governor for a second time after narrowly losing to Kemp in 2018.

President Trump went after Georgia 's Republican Gov . Brian Kemp for a second day in a row at the Thursday White House coronavirus taskforce briefing. Kemp ignored criticism coming from the president and is going ahead with his plan to reopen some Georgia businesses including tattoo parlors and spas. Kemp ignored comments Trump made Wednesday and is planning to allow some Georgia businesses - including tattoo parlors, spas and hair salons - open back up as early as Friday.

Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue into his remarks -- and warned of the dangers of a Democratic monopoly of power in Washington if they lost -- the President's appearance was essentially a wild, on-stage prime-time TV version of Saturday's call in which he leaned on Georgia state officials to conjure votes out of thin air in order. Washington, meanwhile, is bracing for the arrival of thousands of Trump supporters ahead of mass rallies meant to intimidate the lawmakers who will gather for the formal certification of the election.

Trump has repeatedly targeted Kemp in the aftermath of the November 2020 election, after Kemp refused to embrace the former president's false claims that the race was stolen due to voter fraud.

At the end of December, Trump openly called for Kemp's resignation on social media, describing the governor as an "obstructionist" for his failure to uphold his unsubstantiated claims. Around the same time, Trump gave his first indication that he would support Kemp's primary challenger during the state's gubernatorial election in 2022.

Perdue's gubernatorial bid will come just days after voting rights activist Stacey Abrams announced that she would run for the Democratic Party's nomination for governor on Wednesday. Abrams previously ran against Kemp and lost in a narrow race in 2018.

Perdue has reportedly told allies that he decided to run because he's worried about Abrams' prospect for victory against Kemp, The New York Times reported. Recent polling has suggested that the 2022 race will be a tough match, with 44 percent of Georgia voters stating they would elect Abrams.
