Pokémon: Let’s Go! is a beautiful dream for nostalgic fans

Pokémon: Let’s Go! is a beautiful dream for nostalgic fans This could be the most charming Pokémon adventure ever It’s not wrong to feel skeptical of Pokémon: Let’s Go. On the surface, the game is an upscaled version of Pokémon Go mashed up with the first-generation Pokémon games. The pitch is that this is Pokémon for budding Pokémon fans. So where does that leave us who play video games because of Pokémon, and have been doing so since the series launched more than 20 years ago? After trying out Let’s Go, Pikachu! during E3 2018, I have good news: It’s as fun as any other mainline Pokémon game. In fact, it may even be more so — if you’re open to the fact that this beautiful, charming little game is about the journey, not the destination. I spent my Let’s Go, Pikachu! demo walking through Viridian Forest, one of the most iconic areas in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. The differences from that game are immediately clear, however: A Pikachu clung to my trainer avatar’s shoulder as I traveled around. So did a Charmander, which I had released from my Poké Ball to accompany Pikachu and me. I even got to interact with Charmander, whom you can bend down to chat with at any point. If there’s anything you need to know about me, it’s that I am in love with Charmander and everything Charmander-related. Needless to say, I nearly cried when my Charmander looked up at me and the game translated its cheers: It was happy to be walking with me.

Certain third-generation monsters, like Nincada and its two evolutions, have been left out of the wild since the Hoenn region’s Pokémon began to appear in the game last year. In the case of Nincada, it’s possible that its highly specific evolutionary forms kept Niantic from implementing it alongside most other third-generation Pokémon. Nincada’s evolution Shedinja, for example, is only obtainable in the mainline games if players evolve Nincada while having an empty space in their party; it’s essentially a useless husk of a Pokémon.

Meanwhile, Smeargle has been the longest second-gen, nonlegendary holdout. Perhaps its odd moveset — it can only use the attack Sketch, which copies the previous Pokémon’s move and is therefore tough to use in Pokémon Go’s battle system — kept it back from release. Coupled with the upcoming addition of the mythical ’mon Celebi, players will soon be able to complete their entire Johto region Pokédex.

Two years later, you can finally trade with your friends in 'Pokemon Go'

Two years later, you can finally trade with your friends in 'Pokemon Go' For anybody still playing "Pokemon Go" almost two years after its initial release, good news: developer Niantic is rolling out a feature to allow players to trade their Pokemon with one another. It's a big add, given that trading Pokemon is a key element of the series but has been absent from "Pokemon Go." The change is rolling out starting this week, and sets up players with a new system that will allow people to become "friends" in the game, and start to earn rewards together. Niantic announced the news on its blog, along with all the ins and outs of how trading will work. For those who never got in on the fad, "Pokemon Go" is all about catching and collecting virtual monsters called Pokemon. There are hundreds of the little guys, and the gimmick of the game is that you find them scattered around the real world. The game uses location data to log where you are while playing the game, and certain kinds of Pokemon only show up in certain places, like in parks or near bodies of water. Trading makes the collection part a little easier, since you can potentially get rare Pokemon you haven't found yet from friends who have. Adding people to your in-game friends list is the first step in trading Pokemon between players, but it's far from the last — in fact, it doesn't sound like Niantic is making trading particularly easy.

Other rare monsters include Jirachi, the tiny, adorable mythical Pokémon that premiered in generation three, and Deoxys, whose multiple forms allow it to straddle high defense and offense. Each of the four Deoxys forms have been found within the game’s data, although it’s unclear if players will have to obtain them all separately.
