E3 2018: The 15 games we're most excited about

E3 2018: The 15 games we're most excited about Another E3 has come and gone, and the gaming expo has left us with a lot to chew on in the coming months. Titles that have been years in the making are now coming to fruition, while fledgling works seek to chart their own paths in a landscape flooded with veteran brands, sequels, and prestige games. We’ve seen glimpses of them all over the past few days at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Now it’s time to make sense of it all. The Last of Us Part II The latest trailer for The Last of Us Part II shows off the contradiction that made the first game in the franchise so great: a beautiful, subtle bond taking root within a brutal and unkind world. The relationship between Ellie and Dina, to the extent that it’s been shown, is a sweet teenage love story, and the extended gameplay footage proves that Ellie has matured to be capable of the kind of rough and tumble, visceral combat Joel mostly handled in TLOU. If the Paris Games Week trailer from 2017 left some fans cold, this E3 footage was a solid recovery to get hype for the game back on the right track. —Evan Lewis Super Smash Bros. Ultimate We don’t have to craft one of those “Super Smash Bros. characters we want to see in the new game” lists because everyone — yes, everyone — is coming for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch. Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed that all characters who appeared across the franchise, even if they “only appeared once in the past” or through a DLC, will be featured.

Hell is back, and it looks as intense as ever. At Quakecon today, Bethesda revealed the first proper look at Doom Eternal, the sequel to 2016’s excellent reboot of the iconic shooter series, with a series of lengthy videos. Eternal was initially revealed at E3 back in June with a teaser trailer, but this is the first time the developer is showing off gameplay. You can watch the keynote in its entirety above, though the Doom section starts about an hour and 11 minutes into the presentation.

As promised during the original announcement, Eternal introduces hell on Earth, with a new setting that brings the demon hordes off of Mars and down to our home planet; though there are still sci-fi locations like the Martian moon Phobos. The action, meanwhile, looks just as nail-biting and brutal as its predecessor.

It's Creed vs. Drago once again in first Creed II trailer

It's Creed vs. Drago once again in first Creed II trailer Thirty-three years later, it’s Creed vs. Drago all over again. In the first trailer for Creed II, Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed, whose latest opponent is a blast from the Rocky past. Creed is set to take on Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), who killed Creed’s father during a match in Rocky IV. “I don’t got a choice,” declares Creed, to which his trainer and uncle Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) responds, “That’s the same thing your father said and he died right here in my hands.” Stallone, who won a Golden Globe for Creed and wrote Creed II, is back for his eighth go-around as Balboa, while Tessa Thompson returns as Creed’s love interest Bianca. Wood Harris and Phylicia Rashad also star. Creed II opens in theaters on Nov. 21.

The developers at id say that this version of the “doom slayer” — the nameless protagonist — is the most powerful in the series’s history, complete with new weapons and an updated design. There’s also a new “destructible demons” system that lets you cut enemies into little bits, and a system that lets you play as a demon and fight against — or “invade,” as the developers describe it — other players in their own single-player campaign.

The 2016 reboot was a surprise hit of pure action when it launched, especially as the game was saddled with a long and tortuous development. Not only was the original great, but it also expanded to a number of unexpected places, with releases on both the Nintendo Switch and VR headsets.

Doom Eternal is coming to PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, though there’s currently no release date.

The fight becomes personal in new Creed II trailer .
