NASA has canceled its plans for an all-female spacewalk due to a lack of spacesuits that fit women astronauts. While Friday’s much-anticipated spacewalk will still take place, one of the two women scheduled for the journey, Anne C. McClain, will have to stay back. A man will accompany astronaut Christina H. Koch in her place.

Both McClain and Koch required medium spacesuits torso sections, and there is currently only one that is properly configured at the International Space Station, NASA said in a statement on Monday.

NASA head says first person on Mars is 'likely to be a woman'

NASA head says first person on Mars is 'likely to be a woman' Forget everything you've learned about men and Mars. Chances are the first person to land on the planet will be a woman, the head of NASA said recently. Jim Bridenstine was a guest on the science and technology radio show "Science Friday," when he teased that a woman is "likely to be" the first person on Mars. The NASA administrator did not identify a specific person, but said women are at the forefront of the agency's upcoming plans. Bridenstine responded "absolutely" to a question from a Twitter user who asked whether women will be included in the agency's next trip to the moon.

Nasa ’ s plans for the first all - female spacewalk have fallen through – at least in part because the agency doesn’t “I’m suuper [sic] disappointed about the all -woman spacewalk not happening as scheduled this Friday but I’m also super supportive of astronauts having the authority to say ‘I would

It hadn’t been planned as a historic mission, yet it would have represented a moment of sorts: the first all - female spacewalk . But that moment will have to wait, NASA said Monday, because of a somewhat basic issue — spacesuit sizes.

Hillary Clinton was one of many people who had been looking forward to the historic mission and took to Twitter to voice disappointment at NASA’s announcement, writing “make another suit.”

The March for Science posted that the decision was “incredibly disappointing.”

After some of the response, the agency clarified its reasoning on Twitter, explaining that it has more than one medium suit onboard — there just wasn’t enough time to fit and adjust that piece ahead of Friday’s spacewalk.

How to watch NASA's first spacewalk of 2019

How to watch NASA's first spacewalk of 2019 Two NASA astronauts will conduct the first spacewalk of the year Friday at the International Space Station. Flight engineers Anne McClain and Nick Hague are scheduled to begin their excursion at 8:05 a.m. ET. The pair is expected to spend about 6.5 hours performing maintenance along the space station's truss structure. NASA TV will broadcast the spacewalk live online, with their coverage set to begin at 6:30 a.m. ET. © NASA Image: Astronauts Anne McClain and David Saint-Jacques are pictured in between a pair of spacesuits that are stowed and serviced inside the Quest airlock where U.S. spacewalks are staged.

The first all - female spacewalk in history won't be happening this week after all due to a last-minute crew swap, NASA announced today (March 25). NASA had planned to send astronauts Anne McClain and Christina Koch on what would have been the first-ever all - female spacewalk this Friday

NASA is cognizant of the importance of the all - female milestone, Schierholz added in an interview with the New York Times, but said that ultimately the mission has to come first. NASA very carefully schedules its spacewalks , with astronauts being given detailed procedures about where to go, how to

McClain went on a spacewalk in this series on March 22, also with Nick Hague, the astronaut who will join Koch in Friday’s mission. It was during that spacewalk that she realized she preferred wearing the medium size torso, rather than the large one that she was originally slated to wear, Stephanie Schierholz, a spokesperson for NASA, said on Twitter.

“When you have the option of just switching the people, the mission becomes more important than a cool milestone,” Schierholz told the New York Times on Monday.
