NASA teams up with SpaceX, Blue Origin to design a human lunar lander

NASA teams up with SpaceX, Blue Origin to design a human lunar lander NASA has revealed its efforts to create a human landing system shortly after it announced the Artemis lunar exploration program. The space agency has teamed up with 11 private space companies, including SpaceX and Blue Origin, to conduct studies and build prototypes of a lander that can carry astronauts to the surface of the moon.

WASHINGTON — NASA announced May 16 it has selected 11 companies to begin studies and initial prototype development of portions of lunar landers the agency hopes can help it meet its 2024 human landing goal. The awards are part of NASA ’s Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships

NASA has selected 11 companies to help spearhead its efforts to put humans back on the moon by 2024, the agency announced Thursday.

The selected companies will conduct studies, design, and produce prototypes of human-rated landers for the moonshot program. NASA has announced 2024 as a firm goal to put humans back on the surface, then again in 2028 for "sustainable missions."

Over the next six months, the companies will aim to reduce risks during descent, transfer, and refueling components of the lunar lander. The efforts will have to mold with NASA's plan to use the lunar "Gateway."

"NASA’s proposed plan is to transport astronauts in a human landing system that includes a transfer element for the journey from the lunar Gateway to low-lunar orbit, a descent element to carry them to the surface, and an ascent element to return to them to the Gateway," the agency said.

During the first round, the 11 companies were awarded a total of $45.5 million. They include:

• Aerojet Rocketdyne (California): One transfer vehicle study.

• Blue Origin (Washington): One descent element study, one transfer vehicle study, and one transfer vehicle prototype.

• Boeing (Texas): One descent element study, two descent element prototypes, one transfer vehicle study, one transfer vehicle prototype, one refueling element study, and one refueling element prototype.

NASA places its first order for Lunar Gateway components NASA has big plans for returning to the Moon. Whether it can be done within the next five years, as the current administration desires, is yet to be seen, but getting human boots back on the lunar surface is something NASA firmly intends to do, and it's going to do so via a 'Lunar Gateway.'
