Saudi Arabia calls urgent Gulf, Arab League meetings over tensions

Saudi Arabia calls urgent Gulf, Arab League meetings over tensions Saudi Arabia has called for urgent meetings of the regional Gulf Cooperation Council and the Arab League to discuss escalating tensions in the Gulf, the Saudi official news agency said on Saturday. The Saudi Press Agency said King Salman had invited Gulf leaders and Arab states to two emergency summits in Mecca on May 30 to discuss recent "aggressions and their consequences" in the region. Tensions have soared in the Gulf with the US deploying an aircraft carrier and bombers to the region over alleged threats from Iran.

On the same day US President Donald Trump held a social media summit without inviting the two biggest social media companies Twitter and Facebook, the White House also reportedly held an in-house meeting on 5G policy. The discussion was to "combat infighting" about the new mobile network technology, Axios reported Thursday afternoon.

5G, already launched in some parts of the US by Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile, is the next-generation network being used by smartphones to provide faster speeds and more capacity.

The "high-level" White House meeting was called by Mick Mulvaney, acting White House chief of staff, because "tensions over 5G have come to a head" in Trump's administration, according to Axios citing two administration officials. The meeting was led by Larry Kudlow, director of Trump's National Economic Council, the report said, and included Ajit Pai, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair as well as officials from the Defense, State, Commerce and Education departments.

The White House wasn’t given an official heads-up about Mr. Zarif’s arrival, but a person familiar with the matter said the president was aware the Zarif Trump clashed with world leaders over the U.S. trade war with China and other issues at a G-7 summit that showed his isolation on the world stage.

Say what you will about it - about the whole evening - but it was memorable. Here are a few key takeaways. Tensions run high. It began as the president handed the text of his speech to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi: he pointedly turned away when she reached out to shake his hand.

Mulvaney's office and the FCC didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump has previously pushed for US dominance in 5G and even 6G, recently saying the US would lead in 5G "very shortly."

"I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible. It is far more powerful, faster, and smarter than the current standard. American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind. There is no reason that we should be lagging behind," he tweeted in February.
