Vendors have also reported Amazon pushing marketplace sellers into its wholesale supply chain, where it can control prices, and vice versa. At the same time, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has seemed to point to the third-party marketplace as evidence that the company should not face antitrust action.

Amazon is reportedly facing a potential investigation of its marketplace by antitrust officials examining whether it's using its influence to hurt competition.

According to Bloomberg, investigators with the Federal Trade Commission have started interviewing small businesses about how much revenue they make on Amazon versus other online marketplaces like Walmart or eBay.

Citing three merchants, the report says multiple attorneys and an economist have been conducting interviews that last 90 minutes. Antitrust experts quoted by Bloomberg claim the length of the interviews and the people involve suggest a serious probe of Amazon's business.

The FTC and DOJ are said to split up antitrust probes into big tech companies. Shares of other tech giants took a hit over similar concerns. Amazon 's stock fell 4.6% Monday following a Washington Post report that the top U.S. antitrust enforcement agencies have a new agreement on tech oversight.

The European Union is planning an antitrust investigation into e-commerce giant Amazon over its treatment of third-party merchants that rely on the company’s marketplace to sell goods, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

Representatives from Amazon and the FTC could not be immediately reached for comment.

A reported probe comes as tech giants such as Amazon face increased scrutiny from lawmakers over their business practices. In July, the Justice Department said it was reviewing online platforms such as Amazon, Google, Facebook and Twitter over possible anti-competitive and anti-consumer actions.

Internationally, Amazon is facing an antitrust probe by the European Commission over its role as a marketplace for independent sellers and a business directly selling competing products.

Details on the investigation are limited, but it's yet another probe into fears that big tech has amassed too much power. Both Democrats and Republicans have expressed concerns that just a handful of companies control the internet and technology at large. Earlier this summer, a House antitrust subcommitteegrilled executives from Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google.

Facebook confirmed an antitrust probe by the Federal Trade Commission in July after the agency slapped it with a billion fine over its privacy practices. The focus on Google and Facebook by the state attorneys general does mean other tech giants like Amazon and Apple will be free from scrutiny.

But Amazon is now facing a fresh EU probe into the firm over its role as both seller and marketplace , and its compliance with EU competition rules. The German antitrust regulator recently clamped down on Facebook over its market dominance, while Google was hit with a .69 billion antitrust

"E-commerce has boosted retail competition and brought more choice and better prices. We need to ensure that large online platforms don't eliminate these benefits through anti-competitive behavior," said European commissioner for competition Margrethe Vestager in a statement in July.

Amazon isn't alone. Facebook and Google are facing multi-state antitrust investigations over business practices.
