TechnologyHuge Pixel 4 leak tells us everything we need to know about the phone’s best feature
New leak shows Google’s unreleased Pixel 4 in three different colors
Google already confirmed the Pixel 4's signature features, including the no-notch screen design and dual-lens camera sensor, revealing in the process one of the Pixel 4's colors at launch. That's black, of course, as seen in the render above that Google posted online a few weeks ago. Black is one of the most logical color options for any smartphones, but buyers expect vendors to come up with all sorts of options for flagship handsets. The same goes for the Pixel 4 phones, which will be available in at least three color options, according to a new leak.
The Pixel 4 press event hasn’t even been announced, and yet somehow,. That’s how we were able to see the upcoming Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL handsets in a series of hands-on reviews from Vietnam and Thailand this week, videos that confirmed many of the recent leaks.
Of course, it’s not like the Pixel 4 was a massive secret before that, with Google having officially unveiled all of the phone’s signature features, including the main camera setup, 3D face recognition, and the radar-based gestures. Of all of them, the camera is easily the Pixel 4’s most important feature, and a huge leak just confirmed some of the new functionalities that Google built into the Pixel 4’s cameras, as well as the planned UI changes for the app.
Hands-on video highlights Google’s striking new color option for the Pixel 4
We're most likely still about a month out from the launch of Google's next flagship smartphone, but leaks have been springing up at a furious pace in recent days. Just last week, we wrote about the first Pixel 4 hands-on video, and in the process of publishing the post, we had to issue an update to include a second video that had begun making the rounds while we were writing. Ever since then, the floodgates haven't closed. The latest leak comes
was able to inspect the new Google Camera 7.0 app that comes preloaded on the Pixel 4 test units from Asia and confirmed some of the previous findings from earlier versions of the app.
According to the code, the following features will all be available on the Pixel 4:
The Google Pixel 4 supports Audio Zoom
The Google Pixel 4 supports saving depth data using the new Dynamic Depth Format (DDF)
The Pixel 4 has a telephoto lens (a finding that has been corroborated numerous times.)
The devices support longer exposure times in Night Sight.
The devices support the HDRNet algorithm.
Google Lens suggestions can detect and recommend document scanning (there is indeed a string for a new “scan document” suggestion chip.)
Yet another leak details the Pixel 4’s accessible take on Face ID
The Pixel 4 XL leaks continue this week with a new look at the phone's face unlock functionality. While Google confirmed the Pixel 4 would include facial authentication when it detailed the phone's Soli chip in July, this is the first time we've seen the feature in action. Thanks to Vietnamese tech blogger Genk, we get to see how setup works, as well as the adorable animation that accompanies the entire process. Broadly speaking, face unlock looks very similar to Face ID. However, as The Verge points out, what's notable about how Google positions the feature is that it points out the drawbacks of the tech.
The DDF format, I’ll add, seems to confirm that the Pixel 4 rear camera module, in addition to the primary and telephoto lenses.
The report also notes that the Pixel 4 will support a Motion Mode, which lets you take photos of moving subjects while blurring the background. Night Sight, meanwhile, will be faster than before, with zero shutter lag support, and will support astrophotography, just as a leaked video ad revealed. The phone will apparently rely on the phone’s GPU to “accelerate segmentation of the sky and then optimize the image by ‘finding’ the stars and brightening them.”
Other features include Live HDR, HDRNet, and Mesh Warping, with the latter seemingly confirming that the phone’s selfie cam will be of the wide-angle variety. That’s because Mesh Warping is used to correct distortions from wide-angle cameras. The code lists other camera features for the Pixel 4 as well, including support for an AR measuring app, a Rewind Mode and an unknown “Rocky” mode.
Yet another cool new Pixel 4 feature just leaked
The Pixel 4 leaks continue with new revelations about Google’s upcoming flagship phone, which, like its predecessors, isn’t a secret to fans. Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL units running pre-release software have been reviewed extensively in the past couple of weeks even though the smartphone hasn't yet been released. The latest leak concerns the new live wallpapers that are preloaded on the Pixel 4 series, some of which can be seen in the many Pixel 4 images that have been posted online recently. What’s cool about these new images is that some of them will automatically darken once you switch to night mode in Android 10.
on a Pixel 2 to inspect the app, discovering various changes:
For example, the app will offer pointers to photographers, suggesting Night Sight or Portrait Mode where applicable, although the “Camera coaching” feature is optional. Time Lapse mode will also get suggestions based on what you want to shoot. Selfies can be saved as previewed, which means you won’t get any mirroring effects. Long-pressing the shutter button in the Camera mode will let you record videos for as long as you hold the button down.
The Night Sight mode is also getting a new “Infinity” focus option that will come in handy with the astrophotography model. Also, an “HDR+ control” should be available in some camera modes.
