Technology You'll soon be able to ask Siri to play songs on Spotify
Spotify users may finally be able to start using Siri commands to play music
Over the past few months, there's been quite a bit of tension between Apple and Spotify. Not too long ago, for example, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek argued that Apple's 30% cut from the App Store amounts to an unfair tax on competition. What's more, Spotify has taken its complaints about Apple's App Store practices to the European Union where it has levied a range of antitrust claims against the Cupertino-based company. That dispute notwithstanding, the two companies appear to be making peace on another front.
It's been a long time coming, but it looks like you'll soon be able to queue up songs on Spotify with the help of Siri. If you own an iPhone, the lastest Spotify beta allows you to ask Apple's digital assistant to play songs, albums and playlists,, which was among the first to spot the new functionality.

On the Apple Watch, on the other hand, it sounds like Spotify and Siri won't integrate with one another until Spotify releases a dedicated app for Apple's wearable. When The Verge tried to ask Siri to play Spotify songs through the Apple Watch, the digital assistant repeatedly said, "I'm sorry, I can't do that on your Apple Watch." That's likely because the app the companyonly works as a controller for Spotify on your iPhone. For the same reason, HomePod support also seems out of the mix.

If you haven't, you'll need the latest version of Apple's mobile OS to take advantage of the new cross-functionality. That's because the ability for Siri to work with third-party audio apps was one of the new features Apple added to . Notably, Siri's previous inability to integrate with third-party apps was one of the main grievances Spotify brought up against Apple in its . Now that Siri supports all third-party audio apps, Spotify may have a harder time convincing the EC of the merit of its anti-trust complaint.
Spotify's family plan now comes with a standalone kids' app .
Spotify is expanding its family-plan offering with a new app designed for kids. The Spotify Kids app -- with a pared-back, easy-to-use interface -- comes with two silos of age-appropriate music: Audio for Younger Kids features singalongs, lullabies and content from licensed partners such as Disney and Nickelodeon, while Audio for Older Kids includes popular chart tracks and playlists that exclude explicit content. There's no specific age rangeThe app follows several other features implemented by Spotify to lure customers to its Premium Family offering, such as parental controls, a family settings hub and Family Mix playlists.
